The origins of Project Magnet can be traced back to a November 21, 1950 memo that Wilbert B. Smith, an officer of Canada's Department of Government Communications, wrote to the Department of Transportation. Smith, who was personally interested in UFOs, stated:
1) the Canadian government should open an official UFO research project
2) that he was aware of something that would lead to an understanding of how UFOs were involved in the development of new technologies on Earth. 25 * 9-96
According to Smith: "The existence of various UFO-based technologies is confirmed by research that is ongoing." Smith also informed the Department of Transportation that, after making many cautious inquiries at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D. C., he learned the following from Dr. Robert Sarbacher:
A. Matter is the most secret topic in the United States government.
B. Flying saucers exist.
C. How they work is unknown, but is being studied by a small team led by Dr. Vannevar Bush.
D. The entire case before the US authorities is of great importance.

Upon receipt of the note, the Canadian Department of Transportation quickly approved Smith's proposal for an official investigation of UFO reports, and on December 2, 1950, Project Magnet - a classified Canadian government project - went into operation. Many high quality UFO reports have been taken into account by Project Magnet personnel. On August 10, 1953, Smith presented the following message: “It seems that we are faced with the possibility of real existence of extraterrestrial vehicles, regardless of whether they fit into our usual order of things.
Therefore, the next step in this study should be an attempt to acquire this technology. " Three months later, a UFO detection and research station was established in Shirlace Bay, Ontario. On August 8, 1954, the equipment "went nervous," Smith later reported. Everything indicated that the UFO was flying in the immediate vicinity of the station. It is unfortunate that all proximity was in the clouds and no visual detection was made. However, the instrument recorded vibrations.
Two days later, the Department of Transportation announced that Project Magnet was closing. The haste to close the project led to the conclusion that such a decision was made in order to continue research on a more secret level. This is intriguing. It should be noted that in the early 1980s, Dr. Robert Sarbacher reaffirmed his awareness of the secret UFO research by the US government, monitored by Vannevar Bush, and acknowledged knowledge of the fact that the US had both crashed aircraft and alien bodies. Wilbert Brockhouse Smith died on December 27, 1961, at the age of 52.
