There are places in Europe that are visited by curious tourists. One of them is “Croatian Ibiza”, the picturesque resort island of Pag, 60 kilometers long, located in the Adriatic Sea. It is famous for medieval palaces, bustling beach discos, salt mines, delicious cheese and the finest work of local lacemakers.

Not far from the capital is Sveti Yure (St. George's Peak) - a mountain in the form of a regular quadrangle. Historians believe that in the Neolithic era there was an ancient fortress, information about which has not reached our time.

In addition to these striking sights, there is a unique place on the island - the Pag Triangle, a large area of melted earth, as if marked by the hand of an unknown architect. The stones inside the clear geometric shape are different from the stones around it. They have a different structure. It seems as if a tremendous force crushed and melted them.

This formation was discovered by accident. In 1999, performing preparatory activities for the development of a quarry, the Croatian surveyor Zdenko Grabovac examined the land on the Tusto Celo hill, not far from the city of Novalja. His attention was attracted by an area of regular shape, which stood out as a light spot against the background of darker stones. Grabovac made measurements: it turned out to be an isosceles triangle, the base length of which was 22 meters, and the sides were 32 meters each.

Geologists who have studied the strange geometric figure have come to the conclusion that it is 12 thousand years old. They found that when exposed to ultraviolet light, the stones inside the triangle glow red, which means they have been exposed to extreme temperatures in the past. Scientists could not explain exactly how this happened. Therefore, philistine versions of the origin of the Pag anomaly are quite diverse.

Skeptics say it is a natural formation created by wind, salt and rain. And Croatian ufologist Stepan Zvonarich believes that the anomaly appeared in the late Paleolithic period and is a UFO imprint that landed there 8-12 thousand years ago. And the locals themselves often report about unidentified triangular-shaped objects that can still be observed in the local area.

Other mystery lovers believe that this is some kind of sacred symbol left over from an unknown ancient civilization. This hypothesis is supported by the stones laid out in the form of triangles at the top of the nearest hill. Another beautiful local legend connects the Pag Triangle with the name of Jesus, who allegedly visited here after his miraculous resurrection.

Be that as it may, and this territory is not easy: near the triangle, GPS is turned off, batteries are discharged, and travelers feel suddenly tired. Despite this, hundreds of thousands of tourists have visited it in recent years. Superstitious people said that stones could be cursed. But there were also those who were convinced that the mysterious triangle has healing properties. Visitors took stones as a keepsake and took them home in the hope of a miracle.

When the tourist looting went too far, local officials intervened. In 2000, it was announced that the territory was under state protection.

The Pag Triangle still remains an unsolved mystery, and we do not know how it was formed, who could have made it, and what purpose it served in the distant past.
