The RUDN University employee and his Brazilian colleagues questioned the concept of using stable wormholes as portals to various points in space-time. Their findings were published in Physical Review D. Wormholes are a rather cliché in science fiction. A wormhole, or "wormhole," is a kind of tunnel that connects distant points in space or even two universes, by curving space-time.

Theoretically, such a tunnel could lead from one point in space to another, bypassing the actual bridging of the distance between them. Roman Konoplya, a physicist at RUDN University, appreciated the possibility of such interstellar travel.

Is traveling through a wormhole possible?

Usually theoretical physicists offer two options for the repulsive force: the concentration of dark energy or the vacuum fluctuations of quantum fields in a bottleneck. Both solutions are quite unusual and require a certain degree of imagination and optimism to develop further.

In 2011, Greek and German scientists discovered that repulsive forces could be explained without introducing new fields or unusual types of matter. According to their calculations, repulsion can be obtained as a result of quantum corrections of Einstein's theory, motivated by string theory in the low-energy approximation (the so-called Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with dilaton). If the wormhole is found to be resistant to minor temporal and spatial fluctuations, it will be a promising theoretical model based on fundamental string theory.
