The American biotechnology company Bioquark plans to prove that brain death is not irreversible, and to develop technologies for "revitalizing" the main organ of the human body. Reported by The Daily Mail.
The perspectives of this plan were outlined by the head of the company Ira Pastor. “Although humans lack the special ability to regenerate the central nervous system, many species (amphibians, planarians and some fish) can repair and revitalize parts of their brains and stems even after life-threatening injuries,” he said.
The pastor and her colleagues launched the ReAnima project to explore the potential of the latest biomedical technologies to “reanimate” the brain. Scientists will begin clinical trials involving people who were officially declared dead in the US and UK, but continue to be maintained in a vegetative state ("living corpses").
Already received permission for the first stage of clinical trials. The researchers will work with a group of patients aged 15-65 who have been in a state of brain death due to traumatic brain injury. Using peptides, stem cells, lasers and nerve stimulation, scientists will try to revitalize brain tissue.
The first results are expected in two to three months. The researchers hope to observe (on a tomograph) symptoms of revitalization at the border of the upper spinal cord and the lower region of the brain stem (this region, in particular, is responsible for breathing and heartbeat).
