Someonesbones: According to former USGS climatologist Dr. Ethan Trowbridge, the resumption of NASA and USGS activities in the Yellowstone caldera may be a warning sign that a long-dormant supervolcano is poised to erupt and the government is taking a desperate move.
Last year, we featured an exclusive piece by Ethan Trowbridge, in which he talked about his small 2017 expedition to Yellowstone, where he witnessed firsthand a government operation to pump chilled water into newly drilled wells along the southern periphery of the caldera.
In theory, these small holes drilled along the edge of the dome of the magma chamber were supposed to relieve excess pressure by cooling the magma in the center and directing it into natural cavities at the periphery. In the worst case, there was a risk of getting a controlled eruption, which in any case is the most optimistic scenario against the background of a spontaneous, explosive and uncontrollable eruption, as a result of which seventy-five percent of the country could plunge into a nuclear winter.
In November 2017, for some reason, drilling suddenly stopped: equipment and people disappeared without a trace. Perhaps this was due to attempts at public control, perhaps something went wrong - as if Dr. Trowbridge does not know. However, now, according to him, NASA has developed a completely insane plan to cool magma by cryogenic freezing.
Dr. Trowbridge says NASA, in tandem with the USGS, intends to transport tank trucks filled with liquid nitrogen to the fleet, which will be pumped into mines 8-10 km deep. And we are not talking about an experiment, but about an industrial scale of an attempt - about tens of thousands of gallons.
Liquid nitrogen is a very cryogenic liquid that, upon contact with most substances, turns them into highly structured ice. NASA's goal is not so much to cool the magma as to change its structure and make it inert. According to Dr. Trowbridge, the idea itself is not bad and is quite real - if it were about blocking the rise of magma from some small volcano. However, in the case of a supervolcano, this will most likely end in an unprecedented disaster.
“Drilling near the magma chamber is about itself risky, but injecting cryogenic agents there is already complete idiocy. Before reaching the magma, the nitrogen will come into contact with the rock and make the dome brittle. Therefore, the dome will either explode or collapse under its own weight, which will become the catalyst for an immediate eruption. After that, 1000 square miles of terrain will be immediately burned out. And this will happen before the first drop of liquid nitrogen arrives at its destination. In my opinion, there is a 30% chance that everything will happen this way. And I don't like those chances,”says Dr. Trowbridge.
However, the operation, he said, is already underway. Dr. Trowbridge claims that dozens of government geologists and NASA Planetary Defense Advisory Council officials have almost settled in Yellowstone and have established a beachhead 15 miles southwest of Norris, where no one is allowed. Fifteen trucks arrived at the site in March with drill pipes, mud pumps, blasting equipment and construction augers. The curious combination of personnel and equipment clearly illustrates the government's concern about an imminent eruption.

Although unlikely: if NASA / USGS slightly break the wood and spoil something, it will mean instant death both for them and for those who generally sit in this area and manage something there. In general, for everyone,”says Dr. Trowbridge.
According to the most optimistic forecasts, if another powerful eruption occurs in the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park, trillions of tons of ash will be thrown into the atmosphere and cover America with a curtain of darkness into which the sun will not penetrate for weeks or even centuries. The cataclysm will destroy agriculture, damage buildings, disrupt the operation of power plants. It will be a biblical disaster. Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Colorado would generally be buried immediately within three feet of toxic volcanic ash.
“Unfortunately, our reckless science, instead of naming the deadline for the evacuation - since they are unable to prevent it - is engaged in strange experiments and experiments, the result of which may be a global extinction. And there is no way we can prevent this from happening,”says Dr. Trowbridge.
