The supervolcano Toba, located on the island of Sumatra, which once almost destroyed the then still fragile humanity, may try to do it again. Geologists, who published the results of their research in the publication Nature Communications, found that the eruption of Toba volcano, similar to the one that seriously affected the Earth's climate 74 thousand years ago and significantly reduced the biological diversity of our planet, could be repeated, albeit not in the next millennium.

After analyzing the geological features of the structure of the Indonesian supervolcano, scientists found that the eruption that occurred 74,000 years ago and almost killed people (at some point after the disaster, the population of Homo sapiens did not exceed a couple of thousand people), can be repeated. This is evidenced by the active processes of the accumulation of molten rocks in volcanic reservoirs, provoked by the geographical position of the Toba volcano, located between two tectonic plates of different ages.

So far, the researchers note, the level of explosive substances under the volcano has not reached a critical level, but in the next thousand years, mankind will have to face the awakened "monster".
