Throughout June 2017, the University of Utah seismograph network, which monitors the activity of the volcano, recorded 1,171 earthquakes in Yellowstone National Park.
The most powerful earthquake had a magnitude of 4.4 and occurred on June 16 at 06:48 PM MDT. The epicenter was approximately nine miles northwest of West Yellowstone, MT..
In June, a series of earthquakes were recorded.
1) A vigorous swarm of 1,027 earthquakes, six miles north of West Yellowstone, MT, began on June 12 and continues, including the largest event of the month, June 16 (magnitude 4.4). This swarm also consists of five earthquakes in the magnitude range 3 and 72 quakes in the magnitude range 2.

2) 41 cases occurred in a small swarm ~ 14 miles east northeast of West Yellowstone, MT, with swarm activity occurring on June 14 and 15. The largest swarm earthquake (magnitude 2.3) occurred on June 14 at 07:39 AM MDT ~ 14 miles east northeast of West Yellowstone, MT. This swarm includes two earthquakes in a magnitude range of 2.
3) A small swarm of 22 earthquakes occurred on June 1 and June 2 (UTC), 14 miles southwest of Mammoth, WY, with the largest event (magnitude 2.6) occurring on June 1 at 20:29 CLM. This swarm includes 3 earthquakes in the magnitude 2 range.
4) 13 major earthquakes occurred 13 miles east of West Yellowstone on June 13, etc. The largest earthquake (magnitude 1.7) occurred on June 13 at 0714 CLM 16 miles east of northeast of West Yellowstone, mountain
Such sequences of earthquakes are common and account for approximately 50% of the total seismicity in the Yellowstone region.
The activity of Yellowstone Volcano is currently at elevated levels compared to typical background activity.
