Video: Why the Vikings Disappeared 2024, May

You've probably heard about the Vikings - ancient Scandinavian warriors who terrorize the entire territory of Northern Europe. Some researchers believe that the Vikings managed to swim even to America, and could have discovered it much earlier than Columbus.

Also, you probably noticed that from a certain historical moment all information about the Vikings disappeared. What happened to them is not clear.

Maybe they were killed by numerous European peoples, on which they made their predatory raids? Hardly enough - it is enough to recall the history of the American Indians, whom the conquistadors managed to defeat.

And the latter were much less. So the point here is clearly not a numerical superiority. When did they stop mentioning the Vikings? It seems that the last record of their raids dates back to 1379.

Perhaps archaeologists have managed to find traces of the violent death of all Vikings? Unfortunately, nothing of the kind was found. Someone may assume that, they say, the Vikings did not marry at all, or from some point they began to do it much less often, well, they died out for this reason.

But this is complete nonsense, because in the past, the attitude towards marriage was completely different. Now this wedding is associated with holidays, festivities, etc.

And in those days, everything was considered solely from the point of view of benefits - after all, it was much easier to survive in this world together. And the union of two opposite-sex people was then a vital necessity.

Only later did all this become overgrown with additional traditions, holidays, etc. Another popular version is that the Vikings could take and "freeze". Well, just like mammoths.

Like, at that time there could be a small ice age. However, in the annals of that time, there was no mention of ultra-low temperatures. For example, the temperature in the same Greenland averaged about 5-6 degrees per year. Yes, this is not Miami, but you can live.

Most of the researchers believe that there were no serious climate changes in the direction of cooling in those days. In addition, people somehow managed to survive on the territory of neighboring Iceland.

And the official science had no choice but to declare the impossibility of solving the problem of the disappearance of the Scandinavian civilization on the territory of Greenland.

And scientists explain this by a huge number of independent variables, but they cannot give an assessment of each of them. But it was necessary to come up with something.

Therefore, the official science has broken the problem of the "disappearance" of these harsh warriors in two stages:

1) Living conditions in Greenland suddenly began to deteriorate rapidly for no apparent reason

2) After that the mysterious "disappearance" of the Vikings happened

But there is another theory that was put forward by researcher Jared Diamond. He suggested that the Vikings who lived in Greenland did not maintain trade relations with neighboring states on the mainland - the Vikings were too warlike.

And since According to the researchers, there were not many natural resources on the territory of Greenland, then the Vikings simply took and used up all of them, and there was nowhere to wait for help.

So they died. Personally, this version seems unlikely to me, because if there are no resources, then why not go to the mainland and loot coastal settlements? But further - more.

The author of the theory suggested that the Vikings gradually began to migrate from Greenland and eventually assimilated with the population on the continents and thus ceased to exist.

Apparently, researchers will most likely never be able to unravel the mystery of the disappearance of the Vikings.
