And yet, for the inhabitants of our country, ufology began with the "Petrozavodsk miracle".

It is not known why the authorities in that distant now, 1977, decided to publish a message about the phenomenon. Who "missed" or forgot about secrecy? Or maybe the Petrozavodsk newspaper is to blame, the employees of which were “not in the know”? Or the one who is "in the know", left the city and the newspaper on a business trip?..

The authorities held out for three days. So, after all, there were some thoughts, opinions, decisions, prohibitions. Only on September 22 was “permission received”, that is, the go-ahead was given (by whom?). Probably, we will never know about it. And most importantly, the population - by 99.99%! - this is not necessary even now.

The internal editor told everyone interested even then: something like that exists, there is a neighbor - he saw … It is not for nothing that they are not telling us about anything. And he was silent. Just in case.

Yes, it was found out for certain that there was a publication in the Petrozavodsk newspaper "Leninskaya Pravda". But! It is dated September 24!.. The note is full of details of the event, contains interviews with eyewitnesses, where they describe not only UFOs, but also their feelings … Unfortunately, we do not have this text, so we cannot reproduce it in our book. And this is not necessary: the observations do not go beyond the scope of the reader already known about UFOs. What matters is that there was a note in the local press.

However, here we have to state with sadness that, probably, it does not reflect the true picture of the event. Probably, it is built in such a way as to hide something, to be silent, and something, on the contrary, to inflate. Now, if only a day earlier than Moscow …

However, the mysteries of UFOs and the mysteries around UFOs are not so simple. No one has yet given a convincing answer to the question: why, in the conditions of the strictest secrecy, does VG Azhazha give a detailed interview to a foreign magazine about his grandson UFO with the "British flag"? After all, what you read about this is nothing more than our author's interpretation of this phenomenon.

And why suddenly, at the same time in the late 1960s, a mass of provincial newspapers published the "UFO Encyclopedia" - a complete selection of material on UFO sightings from ancient times to the present day? After all, the material went on with a continuation, and in only one mass newspaper of Mordovia "Young Leninist" (Komsomol organ) the selection was about 5-6 pages. Why didn’t anyone stop it, ban it, cover it up, finally?.. The material was enthusiastically read by all our peers, and therefore, perhaps, they subscribed to the newspaper next year.

We will return to this issue in the future, but for now, a dry newspaper line (although I would like to convey the only material of the book in the form in which it was published, that is, documentary). Please: newspaper "Socialist Industry", September 23, 1977.

Unidentified natural phenomenon

Residents of Petrozavodsk witnessed an unusual natural phenomenon. On September 20, at about four o'clock in the morning, a huge "star" suddenly flashed brightly in the dark sky, impulsively sending sheaves of light to the earth. This "star" was slowly moving towards Petrozavodsk and, spreading over it in the form of a jellyfish, hung, showering the city with a multitude of the finest ray streams that gave the impression of pouring rain.

After a while, the ray glow ended. The Medusa turned into a bright semicircle and resumed its movement towards Lake Onega, the horizon of which was enveloped in gray clouds. In this veil, then a semicircular ravine of bright red color to the middle and white on the sides formed. This phenomenon, according to eyewitnesses, lasted 10-12 minutes.

The director of the Petrozavodsk hydrometeorological observatory Yuri Gromov told the TASS correspondent that the workers of the meteorological service of Karelia had not previously observed analogues in nature. What caused this phenomenon, what is its nature, remains a mystery, because no sharp deviations in the atmosphere, not only over the past day, but also on the approach to them, were not registered by the weather observation posts. We also know, Yuri Gromov emphasized, that no technical experiments were carried out in our area at this time. However, it is also impossible to attribute everything to the category of mirages, because this unusual phenomenon has many eyewitnesses, whose testimonies are largely identical, although they happened to observe a rare phenomenon that did not leave material evidence about itself from different parts of the city.

N. Mipov, Petrozavodsk.

With a request to express his point of view on this issue, the Leningrad correspondent of TASS turned to the director of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences V. Krat.

- A bright ball of fire, - said the scientist, - which rapidly drew the sky from south to north over the Leningrad region and Karelia in the early morning of September 20, was also observed by the Pulkovo astronomers. Now it is still difficult to explain with certainty its origin, since the information of eyewitnesses and observers continues to arrive and are analyzed.

It would be possible to quote a message that was also published on September 23, 1977 in the Izvestia newspaper, but we will not do this for the reason that we consider it less objective. In the text of N. Milov. all the words of Y. Gromov are abbreviated, and the words of V. Krat, on the contrary, are supplemented by the fact that, they say, scientists tend to consider this phenomenon … a trace of a meteorite.

You can read the chapter completely devoted to this event in the book of Solomon Shulman "Aliens over Russia", where there is a very detailed and witty analysis of the actions of local and central press organs and much more.

However, the archives suggest that strange things were observed in Karelia before 1977. In 1928, over the village of Shuknavolok, near Vedlozero, a flight of a cylindrical ten-meter body was observed, from the tail of which a red flame and sparks emanated. After breaking through the ice, the mysterious object went under water. After that, local residents began to meet a strange, large-headed creature on the shore, a little over a meter tall with thin arms and legs. At the sight of people, the creature immediately dived back into the water, which is why it received the nickname "water". Since then, anomalous phenomena have also been observed in those places. So, in 1932, a dense black cloud "descended" on the village. After his disappearance, a jelly-like substance remained on the ground, which the peasants collected in bottles and used as a medicine. Currently in the village of Shuknavolok there are strange interference on television, whereas in the neighboring village (after five kilometers) there are no such obstacles.
