For the fourth decade in a row, the "Perimeter" defensive system has been guarding Russia, not shutting down for a second. Tens of thousands of sensors, like the nerve cells of the human body, are scattered across the country, thousands of missiles doze in mines, and radar installations scan the whole world, transmitting data to dials and screens installed in headquarters and command centers, where officers are on duty around the clock. If the place where the sentries stand near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame near the Kremlin is called Post No. 1, then “Perimeter” is definitely Post No. 0. As the Wild Prapor used to say - the character of Sergei Artsibashev in the film “DMB”: “From here, guys, our Motherland dictates its unyielding will to the rest of the world community”.

The essence of the system is terribly simple: if a massive nuclear attack is carried out on Russia and all the military command and political leadership are destroyed overnight, then all the remaining missiles (and there will be several hundred of them, even if most of the silos and installations are eliminated) will be automatically launched towards the attacking enemy, and a nuclear Armageddon will come on our planet.

The weapon is so terrible that the mere fact of its presence immediately excludes large-scale military operations with the use of nuclear weapons. The Americans nicknamed this system "Dead Hand".

The main military secret of Russia was developed in the early 1980s, and the system was tested on November 13, 1984. The reason for its creation was the reports of Soviet intelligence officers, in which it was reported that the US military strategy provides for a war with the USSR through a massive nuclear strike on military command centers and points of political control. In order to guarantee retaliation, it was decided to develop the latest defensive system.

The Perimeter works as follows: thanks to the thousands of sensors that we have already mentioned above, the situation is continuously monitored throughout the country: seismic, radiation, as well as in the field of radio communications and other areas that allow fixing nuclear strikes. If communication with the General Staff and the President is lost, a launch command is given.

Communication with the head of state occurs through a computer that is constantly with him - the so-called nuclear briefcase. And communication with the military command is maintained through special radio transmitters that constantly send a conditional signal, as, for example, since the early 1980s, a shortwave radio station at a frequency of 4625 kHz, known among radio amateurs as the Buzzbox, has been doing it. In the entire history of their observation of her, her usual white noise with tones was violated only a few times - a voice sounded on the air, transmitting encrypted digital and letter codes, as well as voice commands in Russian.

According to rumors, the uniqueness of the system lies in the fact that the decision to launch can be made automatically, however, there are rumors and the exact opposite, and since this is a military secret with seven seals, it is impossible to be sure for sure.

After the decision to start, special hyperspeed missiles are launched from the super-protected mines. But they do not fly at the enemy, but over the territory of the country, constantly transmitting a coded signal to all the remaining launching devices. As soon as the signals from these messengers reach the nuclear missiles, they are automatically launched.

To make it completely clear, Russia is a nuclear triad. This means that missiles are launched not only from mines on the ground and from mobile missile systems, but also from strategic Tu-160 missile carriers, which are on duty in the sky around the clock, from nuclear submarines of the Borei type, which may be located in any part of the World ocean, and from unmanned underwater vehicles. The combat component of the "Perimeter" is the most powerful ballistic missile in the world "Voevoda".

During the Cold War, scientists from the USSR and the United States calculated what losses the countries would suffer in the event of a mutual nuclear attack. Even then, the numbers were frightening - about 100 million people were supposed to die in the Union, 80 million people in the USA. But military thought does not stand still: the rest of the countries - owners of nuclear weapons - have also created for themselves similar systems of "doomsday weapons." So, given the progress of technological thought in recent decades, a nuclear war in modern realities will entail a much larger number of victims. Simply put, after the use of atomic weapons there will be no winners or losers, because everyone will die. And this deprives of any sense of the military conflict with Russia.
