A farm worker near Plenty Bay (New Zealand's North Island) went to milk the cows in the morning as usual and was amazed to find a huge crack near the fence of the field.
The massive sinkhole happened quite unexpectedly and no one heard how it all happened. The crack is about 30 meters deep and over 200 meters long.
Anyone who has already seen this crack up close, remained amazed and at the same time called it "very beautiful." According to farm manager Colin Tremaine, when the worker saw the crack early in the morning, he didn’t realize how huge it was. It was possible to see it fully only when the sun rose.
According to New Zealand scientist Brad Scott, he had never seen anything like it in New Zealand before and that all the faults that he had seen before were much smaller.
At the same time, the crack gave scientists an excellent object for research, exposing 60-thousand-year-old layers of volcanic sediments.

But for the farm it became a big headache. Now everyone is afraid that cows, which are kept here on free range in the fields, may fall into the crack. The farm manager is now concerned with making a fence around the crack.
Presumably the failure occurred due to the fact that the soil was heavily washed away. Earlier in this area of New Zealand there were heavy rain showers.
