He is successfully trying to set a world record, having passed two round -the- world voyages in one year without interruption - around Antarctica and the North Pole. At the moment it is already known that the problems on the "Scorpius" arose due to bad weather. “In the midst of the disaster, lightning struck the vessel, after which almost all navigation systems went out of order,” said the expedition's press secretary Anna Subbotina.
According to her, none of the crew members were injured. As soon as the thunderstorm subsided, the on-board equipment and the satellite phone began to work intermittently and interference, the Internet connection disappeared. The captain of the vessel Sergey Nizovtsev said that all this time the crew of the yacht is trying to escape from the so-called Bermuda triangle towards the next point of its route - Iceland. However, strong winds change the direction and speed of ocean currents, which creates turbulence.
“Even the engine turned on at full power does not help, therefore, we can say that we are spinning in one place, in the region of 27 degrees 9 minutes north latitude, 64 degrees 50 minutes west longitude,” Nizovtsev said. These are the coordinates shown to the captain of the vessel by GLONASS - the only navigation system that did not fail on board after a lightning strike.
Nizovtsev also said that there was no panic on board, despite the fact that on Friday, July 13, all the crew members witnessed a strange phenomenon. According to the captain, huge circles of light appeared over the ocean, suddenly disappearing and reappearing. In addition, vertical clouds rose from the water, resembling a foggy wall.
It should be added that in April this year, "Scorpius" also faced a difficult situation. The vessel lost contact with the outside world for several days while passing through a difficult ice section in Antarctica.
Yacht "Scorpius" is assigned to the port of Sochi, there are seven people on board - four Russians and three Ukrainians. In January of this year, the members of the expedition left the Russian polar station Bellingshausen on a cruise around Antarctica. The aim of the trip is to break several world sailing records.
