One of the places on the planet where two currents meet - the warm Gulf Stream and the cold Labrador - is Cape Hatteras. It is located on the island of the same name on the coast of North Carolina. Due to the fact that there are currents of different temperatures in this place, strong gusts of wind occur here, which lead to the formation of sandy shoals. These shoals were often the site of shipwrecks. Therefore, the area around Cape Hatteras is called the "cemetery of the Atlantic."
Europeans first discovered Cape Hatteras back in the sixteenth century. In search of new, more climate-friendly lands, British colonists landed on the island, erected a lighthouse here and planned to settle for a long time. However, when the pirate Drake, by a lucky chance, looked into the island, he found there a little living hungry people.
Despite such a difficult fate of the British colonists, after a certain period of time, new desperate Europeans set off to conquer Cape Hatteras. There were a hundred and fifty new arrivals in total. They, like their predecessors, also cherished the idea of a long and happy life on the picturesque island. But it all ended faster.
After the people settled on the cape, the governor of the settlement departed for Britain to receive subsidies for the needs of the new city. When he returned, he saw a strange and inexplicable picture. The city was empty, there were no people on the streets or in the houses. The dwellings seemed to have been abandoned quite recently. At the same time, it was not possible to find a single trace or hint - where the inhabitants of the city so suddenly left. The only trace of the disappeared was found on one of the trees - the word was carved there: Croaton.
Since then, it has not been possible to find out what this inscription left by the suddenly disappeared colonists meant. Although there have been many suggestions: from alien abductions to mass suicide due to mental clouding.
In addition, Cape Hatteras is famous for its strong winds and storms. In 1944, the strongest storm was recorded here, during which the wind speed reached one hundred and ten miles per hour. The raging element on the cape carried the equipment of the hydrometeorological station into the ocean, the employees of which were observing the weather. And the lighthouse installed near Hatteras was torn off several times from its strong chains and carried into the ocean.

A specific and little-studied phenomenon is observed on the cape, which has received the name "Southern Mist". During this phenomenon, in completely cloudless weather, the horizon is suddenly obscured by a dark streak of vapors, which significantly reduces visibility.
However, all the dangers associated with visiting Cape Hatteras do not stop adventure and outdoor enthusiasts. People come here to conquer the high waves of the ocean, and also to search in the sand for gold from sunken galleons, which have been repeatedly nailed to the cape. Those who wish can also visit the Wright Brothers Museum, located on the island - where their first flight took place on December 17, 1903. This is not surprising - where else could you find such strong winds that would help the brothers to lift their first plane into the air.
