Doctors, fearing for the life of the animal, cut off the newborn calf's fifth leg, which was sticking out right from his back
The livestock breeders of the Slobozhansky agricultural complex in the Kharkiv region were simply shocked when from the womb of a young heifer Zorka a baby was born … with five legs!
An extra limb grew from the back of the poor thing, on the withers. The owners took pity on the freak and immediately took him to the city zooveterinary academy.
“Such pathologies as the fifth leg are very rare in animals,” says the head of the Department of Surgery, Professor Dmitry Sarbash. - Usually, animals do not survive with this pathology. To save the poor calf, we decided to have an operation, although no one had done anything like that.
The operation was successful and the doctors removed the calf's extra leg under local anesthesia.
Operation
The calf was operated on by three surgeons with several assistants. Shaving the fur around the extra leg, they treated it with iodine and proceeded to amputate it. The cardiologist listened to the animal's heart during the entire operation.
- The baby was pretty nervous, her heart was pounding just wildly, but the operation took only 20 minutes and there were no complications, - continues Dmitry Sarbash. - For another ten days, surgeons will observe the horned patient, and then we will dismiss her for a walk.
