Winged phrases and well-established speech constructions often accompany a certain life situation. Unfortunately, "nothing lasts forever under the moon", each of us will leave the earth in due time and most likely, they will say about each of us like this: "It's either good about the dead, or nothing but the truth." This is the full text of the saying. It was expressed by the ancient Greek politician and poet Chilo from Sparta in the distant VI century BC. The historian Diogenes, who lived in the 3rd century AD, brought it up in his famous work "The Life, Teachings and Opinions of Glorious Philosophers."

Diogenes, who lived in the 3rd century AD, left behind him the only book written in the ancient era on the history of philosophy. It consisted of 10 books, where the thinker outlined the teachings of the ancient Greek thinkers. The book contains not only the history of the development of philosophy, but also biographical information about Plato, Pythagoras, Proclus, written by other authors. So the book contains the works of different people, it is an encyclopedia of the development of science and thought of those times.

Over time, the phrase "About the dead is either good or nothing but the truth" lost its last words, thus its meaning has changed a lot. In the original meaning, it was assumed that about the deceased people, during their commemoration, it was possible to speak only by the truth, remembering a person, not to attribute to him any sins or deeds. Subsequently, people, for the sake of ethics, decided not to say anything but good about a person, adding to what was said: "blessed memory."
