Scientists at Tomsk State University (TSU) have developed a security system with artificial intelligence that can identify a person by gait, face, fingerprints, gadgets, and microchips embedded under the skin. The system is planned to be implemented in the universities of Tomsk in accordance with the project for the integration of all Tomsk universities into a single "Big University", the head of the "Digital Economy" laboratory of TSU Alexander Ilyin told TASS.

“We have been working on this project for two years now, we made a pilot in the 12th building [TSU] on Herzen Street. We have our own controllers and readers. Working title - "Smart pole": video cameras and sensors are installed on the poles. Cameras at a distance recognize the silhouette, and artificial intelligence, a neural network, recognizes whether you are walking or not, "said the agency's source.

Ilyin specified that a prototype of the system has now been created, several neural networks are being trained that will be able to recognize a person not only by gait, but also by fingerprints, face and even a personal smartphone. Databases, which are collected and processed by artificial intelligence, are stored on a blockchain distributed ledger system, which ensures their security. Now scientists are receiving a patent for the development. Similar systems for human recognition based on various characteristics are currently being developed, including in Russia, but there is no direct analogue of the technology of specialists from Tomsk.

The creators of the system are planning to first implement it on the territory of TSU, and subsequently - in other Tomsk universities, which will be part of the "Big University". It is also adapted for use in public transport and will allow you to pay for travel simply using a face scan and fingerprints.

As Ilyin clarified, the laboratory staff are also setting up the system to work with microchips implanted under the skin, which nine laboratory employees and the adviser to the TSU rector Konstantin Belyakov intend to implant. At present, the prototypes of the chips have been manufactured by the Moscow company "Mikron" and are already at the test site. For their implementation, scientists are awaiting the results of medical examinations in 2020.

Microchip and infrastructure

Belyakov told TASS that his chip is currently in a special syringe, which he keeps in a drawer on his desk. However, the advisor to the rector has not yet decided on the experiment - not only because of the lack of medical indications, but also because of the lack of infrastructure for its use.

“There is not enough infrastructure now. A similar one has already been done in building 12 - there are several doors [equipped with an AI security system] that are triggered by it. I can also start my car with a chip and use it as a bank card, but there is no need to insert a chip yet,”Belyakov explained, noting that he expects to implant a microchip when more opportunities for its use appear.

About the Big University project

Earlier, the authorities of the Tomsk region announced plans to integrate all six universities of the regional center into a single "Big University". This project will increase the chances of winning the competition for the creation in Tomsk of one of 15 Russian scientific and educational centers (REC) of the world level. Tomsk REC will focus on the export of educational services. The creation of a network of 15 RECs in the Russian Federation is one of the tasks of the national project "Science".

As the Governor of the Tomsk Region Sergei Zhvachkin explained earlier, the project will increase the country's GDP by 1%. According to the rector of TSU Eduard Galazhinsky, 100 thousand students will study at the united universities of Tomsk by 2035, up to 40% of whom will be foreigners. The aggregate budget of universities will reach $ 1.5-2 billion - more than the aggregate budget of Moscow State University, NRU HSE and St. Petersburg State University.
