To begin with, the tunnels themselves are quite a creepy place. It is dark and so crowded that an attack of panic and claustrophobia can begin, there is dampness, mold, and their disturbing atmosphere awakens in us a very ancient feeling that primitive people still had. The tunnels are great places to tell scary stories.
In this place, we feel uncomfortable both alone and in the company of friends. And there is something that makes these inhospitable and dark places even more eerie - the idea that somewhere in the pitch darkness, terrible unknown creatures are running and crawling. What can make your spine creep even more is the realization that encounters with tunnel monsters do not only happen in horror movies.
This incident took place in 1976 in Toronto, Canada and is known as the Tunnel Monster of Cuba Town. Near Toronto, there is an extensive network of underground caves and tunnels dug for various needs. 51-year-old Ernest (his name was not announced in the press) climbed into the tunnels on the ground in order to find the missing kitten. At first he was looking for a kitten in an area nearby, but then he came across an entrance to the ground and decided to climb there with a flashlight.
The man descended into the darkness and managed to advance through the tunnel only 10 feet (3 meters), when suddenly some strange creature jumped out of the darkness right at him. It was described as a long and skinny monkey, three feet (90 cm) high, with large teeth and covered in gray fur. She had large eyes that burned with a bright orange color, which immediately frightened Ernest very much.
Just think, the monkey escaped from the zoo and settled in the sewers, many would think. But it's not that simple. According to Ernest, the monkey spoke to him!
“What I saw was like a terrible nightmare that I will never forget,” the man later told reporters, “This creature told me 'Get out of here, get out of here!' And his voice was hiss like a snake. After that, it fled into another tunnel and disappeared into the darkness. I got out as fast as I could, trembling with great fright."

The case with Ernest and his interview were published in the Toronto Sun on condition of anonymity, Ernest was afraid that if they found out his full name, everyone would laugh at him. At the same time, the man escorted the journalists to the place where everything happened. The journalists saw a small gap in the ground between the houses, which went underground into a tunnel.
The journalists suggested that it leads into the sewers and went down there. Inside, they walked a little back and forth, did not find anyone, but they came across a mutilated corpse of a cat, which was half buried in the sand. Apparently it was the same kitten that Ernest lost. But who killed and buried him?
After that, journalists interviewed the workers who maintain the sewer tunnels and one of the workers made a frightening statement:
“None of the people living on the surface know what kind of world is down there. And this is a completely different world. Hardly anyone can assume that people can live down there, but it happens and a few years ago in New York they found one such. I do not know what Ernest saw down there, but I will say one thing for sure. If I have to go down to this hell, I will never go there alone."
"Monster from Kabbajtuan" is still a Toronto mystery and no one knows what it could be. It is especially strange that since that year there has been no more information about him.
There is one more detail in this story. The area where this creature was seen was known among the local Indians as the place where dwarf hairy humanoid creatures lived called Memegwesi - "Little People". Maybe once they went into the tunnels, hiding from white people and still live somewhere in the depths?
There are other stories of tunnel monsters. In 1963, in Illinois, people from the outskirts of St. Louis and Centerville began to regularly spot the hairy humanoid creature.
He was described as dangerous and vicious. Sometimes it rummaged around in the courtyards of houses, and once even tried to attack a person. On May 9, 1963, the police began receiving many calls about this creature. The peak was over 50 calls a day.
Eyewitnesses reported that the creature, when trying to catch it, ran away into the sewer tunnels all the time. At the same time, it was difficult to describe his appearance. People gave conflicting descriptions, and a group of children once described him as "half male, half female with half bald and half hairy head."
By the end of May, reports of sightings of this creature abruptly fizzled out and suddenly ceased. Who it was and remained a mystery.
Another bizarre case was recorded in 1981, when an article appeared in The New Valley Dispatch of Pennsylvania on March 5th titled "Green Thing Sparks Rumors" ("Rumors of a green creature").
The note reported that a group of young people near Kensington, PA saw a reptile-like creature 4 feet (120 cm) high. the creature looked like a "dinosaur-like humanoid" with a slender tail and emerged from a sewer tunnel. It was reported that the teenagers tried to chase this creature, and one even tried to grab its tail, but the creature screamed so loudly that the guy let go of his tail in fright. The creature eventually disappeared into the darkness of the tunnel.
According to the description of adolescents, this creature is quite suitable for the description of reptilians or reptilian aliens. What if they have a base somewhere underground, and they use the tunnels to get out? This version is possibly confirmed by another case with a green reptile, this time in 2008 in the state of California.
A resident of the city of Anaheim was walking with her dog when her dog suddenly turned his attention to a strange green creature that was peeping out of a sewer manhole. The woman claimed that later this creature came to her at night in a trailer and sneaked up to her bed.
In fear, the woman ran to her friend's trailer and began to ask him for help. At the same time, according to her, there were other green lizards around her trailer and they climbed out of the sewer hatch, from which the woman began to scream in horror.
Her friend jumped out with a golf club and started yelling at these monsters and threatening them, after which they apparently decided not to fight and left. The man described these creatures as very large reptiles with large, sharp teeth.
The story was not over yet. The next night, the couple heard eerie screams in the dark, and in the morning they found the remains of an animal nearby. This man and woman was enough to move with their trailers to a new place.
In connection with these stories about the sewer reptilians, it is possible to recall the curious fact that in the 1930s a huge network of mysterious tunnels was discovered near Los Angeles. A report of this was published in the Los Angeles Times, and geological engineer G. Warren Shufelt discovered the tunnels.
Shufelt believed that the tunnels spanned Los Angeles and the entire state of California. as well as the areas closest to it. He was also convinced that these tunnels were built by some ancient lizard civilization.
And such tunnels with reptilians are found not only in America.
The site of the researcher of anomalous phenomena Lon Strickler published a letter several years ago from a certain geologist Gregor from Austria. According to Gregor in May 2011, he was working in a small cave on the eastern shore of Lake Halsatter and suddenly heard voices in the dark. Gregor thought he was hallucinating, but continued to work, inevitably listening to the voices.
As he explored, Gregor approached a strange cave wall, which was smooth and had a strange rotten and very strong smell. The soil near the wall was red, and then he heard strange voices again.
“At that moment I was all overwhelmed with horror and decided to get out of the cave. After running a few meters, I decided to see what was behind and looked around. I saw a bright yellow light breaking out of the darkness, and then I saw a few more yellow lights. And then I saw the creature itself and was numb with fear.
The creature was humanoid, but it wasn't human. They were of slightly different heights, but similar in appearance, muscular lizard-like creatures. Like finding a good term to describe these creatures. They were dressed in different colored clothes that covered their legs, so it's hard to tell what color and what shape their bodies were, but I got a good look at their muzzles, as well as long tails that swayed back and forth.
Their arms and legs were very massive, it was noticeable even through their clothes. They communicated with each other, but I could not understand what they were talking about and their language was completely unfamiliar to me. There were probably about 20 of them in total and they walked through the passage to some other hole in the wall."
Gregor eventually managed to get out of that cave, but he was in a state of shock for a long time and only later could he remember everything that happened in all the details.
Another strange incident occurred in the mountains of Washington state. This incident was described in the book by Brad Steiger "Real Monsters, Gruesome Critters, and Beasts from the Darkside" ("Real monsters, terrible creatures and monsters from the dark"). The place called Cascade Tunnel, which is an abandoned railway tunnel, has been legendary for many years about the yellow-eyed monster.
A certain Dave once told about a meeting with this creature. The year of the meeting is not indicated in the book. Dave went into the dark tunnel to take a series of photographs, but suddenly in front of him, at a distance of about 40 feet (12 meters), he saw bright yellow eyes. According to him, no known living creature has such bright eyes.
At the same time, in the twilight around the burning eyes, one could see a dark massive figure. It was enormous, reaching 9 feet (2.7 m) in height. Seeing the giant, Dave in panic rushed out of the tunnel to his truck.
Some time later, after Dave told other people that he had seen the monster in the tunnel, Dave again decided to return to this place together with a group of curious people. He wondered if they would see the creature again.
However, as Brad Steiger writes, "None of them came back and were never seen again."
Not all tunnel monsters are humanoid creatures. There are meetings with something that looks like a huge spider. It happened in Tokyo (Japan) in the 1970s.
A group of workers serving underground communications suddenly came across one day in a tunnel with what looked like a huge web. The cobweb stretched for a considerable distance under the ceiling of the tunnel, and skeletons and corpses of rats and cockroaches dangled in the cobweb.
At one point in the web, there was a dark hole about 25 cm in diameter. The workers did not wait for someone to get out of it and left that site. They believed that it was an ordinary spider, however, based on the size of the cobweb and hole, we can safely say that spiders of this size do not exist in nature or they are not yet known to scientists. What happened next with this web is unknown.
