The widespread use of video surveillance systems throughout the world and in our country could not pass without a trace - reports of unexpected phenomena began to appear more and more often in the press

Discussion of images unexpected at first glance, according to some representing objects of a special kind - " skyfish ", attracted everyone's attention.

New images made by Denis (Ph. D., hydrobiologist) and Natalia (biologist, ichthyologist) Zavarzin from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk made it possible not only to fully clarify the nature of the visual phenomenon, but also to make it as clear and understandable as possible for everyone.

As Denis and Natalia Zavarzin write in their letter, having watched “a pseudo-popular science film about another facet of the unknown, invisible“rods”flying around us at high speeds around us, fixed only on photo or video equipment, we were slightly imbued with the idea of a previously unknown form of life. However, as biologists, we were alarmed by the following: where are the traces of their vital activity, where are the dead individuals, remains, fossils, why are these “rods” visible only when viewing photo and video materials? The thought involuntarily suggests itself that this phenomenon is somehow connected with the peculiarities of shooting something quite ordinary, outwardly unlike these rods.

The answer to this question was obtained by biologists Zavarzin during one of the scientific expeditions, when they took pictures of insects flying around a light bulb. The result is presented in the photo gallery. As can be seen from these images, images of "rods unknown to science" can be obtained by anyone who tries to photograph the flight of insects at night around a burning lantern or lamp. Our readers used the Olympus C3040 Zoom camera for shooting, but a similar effect can be obtained when shooting these "objects" with an ordinary digital camera - you just need to turn off the flash and change the exposure settings.

The story with the exposure of another myth emphasizes how important it is to get the most complete and clear picture of the phenomena that arise when observing the world around us through optics of more and more new devices.
