People have long been familiar with the fear of mysterious deep bogs covered with sedge and reeds of pools. This fear is fully justified, because at the bottom of the swamp the ruler of the bogs, the ruthless Swamp, is guarding the unwary traveler. According to legend, this is a humanoid creature with very long arms, overgrown with wool, covered with snails, fish scales and algae. The bog woman is the wife of this creature.
At all times, swamps were considered a dangerous and mysterious place, a favorite haven for all kinds of evil spirits. Unlike rivers and lakes, where you can meet completely harmless watercreepers or good shores, an insidious swamp waits for a person in the bogs. She is a lovely long-haired girl sitting in a huge water lily flower. The bog woman never appears in front of a person in full growth, because instead of legs it has goose paws overgrown with black wool.
A bitterly crying bog woman attracts the attention of a passer-by and, when he approaches her, grabs and drags him to the bottom. There are times when, instead of crying, the bog woman sings a long, sad song and does it so beautifully that a person, forgetting about everything, goes to her voice and falls into her hands. At night, it is the marshes who light strange lights on the surface of the water, trying to awaken curiosity in people and lure them closer to the swamp.
It is believed that the drowned women, who died in the bog and fell into the clutches of the Swamp, turn into a swamp spirit. It is believed that these characters are the sisters of mermaids and water girls, however, unlike the latter, they wish a person only evil. A meeting with a swamp almost always ends in death, because it is impossible to resist her beauty.
