She loves rings and water and hates being treated without respect. She is secretive and careful - she has never revealed her secret to any mortal. And mankind from time immemorial to our time has been racking its brains over a simple question - what kind of miracle is this?
Ball lightning - so scientists agreed to call this mysterious guest. But neither in the beautiful title, nor in the thick scientific books and textbooks is there a solution to its secret.
She does not let hundreds of scientists around the world and thousands of casual witnesses of her mysterious appearances sleep, because no mortal knows the answer to a simple question: who is she?

Myths and legends from time immemorial keep stories about mysterious fireballs.
In Tajikistan, there is a mysterious mound made of rounded stones. Local residents from generation to generation pass on the legend about the fiery underground kingdom and the evil spirits living there. Sometimes they appear at the top of the mound in the form of burning balls, surrounded by a black glow and the smell of sulfur.

But this is not always the case.
A group of Japanese schoolchildren in the mountains were caught in a thunderstorm. In order not to lose the children, the teacher ordered to connect with one rope, like climbers. Lightning struck this chain. Every third child was killed, the rest survived.
Another inexplicable consequence of a meeting with lightning is that it leaves on the body of its victim a kind of photograph, which even received the name - "keranography". This is a scientific term. But not a single scientist will answer you the question of what it is and why, in the place where the mysterious ball touched the body of its victim, a clear photographic imprint often remains on it.

Science has long been trying to unravel the mystery of ball lightning, but here, too, its trail lasts a series of tragedies.
July 1753. Georg Richman and Mikhail Lomonosov, during a thunderstorm, went to their home installations to conduct experiments with atmospheric electricity. Richman's installation was on the table in the entryway. A strong gust of wind came. Richman approached the electrometer and stopped at a distance of 30 cm. Suddenly, a pale bluish fireball the size of a fist struck from a thick iron bar right into the left side of his forehead. It was ball lightning. Soon Lomonosov arrived with a doctor. However, they could not save Georg Richmann, an outstanding scientist who stood at the origins of the study of atmospheric electricity.
Since then, 2.5 centuries have passed, but scientists have not advanced one iota in understanding the nature of this mysterious phenomenon.
The description of ball lightning in the most serious and authoritative scientific publications is limited to only modest assumptions - this is a rare atmospheric phenomenon of a still unknown nature. The size of this ball usually does not exceed a few centimeters, but there is evidence of giant lightning - more than a hundred meters in diameter! Its light is also different. It can be blue, white or orange. This is just dry encyclopedic data. But scientists find it difficult to hide their emotions when it comes to ball lightning.

Such evidence was collected by Professor Igor Stakhanov back in the Soviet Union. In November 1975, his article on ball lightning appeared in the journal Science and Life. At the end of the article, the author asked readers to write about their meeting with her. And letters began to arrive at the editorial office from all over the country. A huge number of people have actually met this ball puzzle.
By the end of 1976, there were more than a thousand letters. Unexpectedly for himself, the scientist became the owner of the world's largest database for describing ball lightning. Stakhanov understood that none of the hypotheses about the nature of this phenomenon existing at that time corresponds to the whole variety of signs and properties that ordinary people wrote to him about. Stakhanov scrupulously analyzed each individual example. In fact, he was the first scientist to speak seriously and openly about his research on ball lightning. He had to literally punch the way for this topic in science. He devoted most of his book only to the scientific proof of the existence of ball lightning in nature. The testimonies of eyewitnesses collected and processed by him are the most valuable material for studying and creating new hypotheses for the further advancement of science towards solving this mystery.
And here a new problem arose: who can say exactly what a person saw? Sometimes observers call the same phenomenon differently: someone calls it “ball lightning”, and someone calls it “UFO”. But this glow can also be the result of human activity, technogenic release.
Let's look around. Inhabitants of the XXI century are already accustomed to the fact that something is happening in the atmosphere. There is constant human intervention, such as spacecraft launches or military exercises. This is always associated with the appearance of the so-called man-made waste. It can take many forms and look quite like ball lightning. It is difficult for an untrained observer to estimate the size of an object, the distance to it. The question remains: what did he see?
But we have examples of specialists observing ball lightning.
In the late 70s, an important discovery in the field of geophysics was made with the help of radar stations: radar marks of an unknown nature were confidently recorded. These targets, as the military say, are called "angels".
Alexander Plaksin, scientific expert of the RF Ministry of Defense on the problems of anomalous aerospace phenomena:
- The locators are designed in such a way that if the planes are in flight, they respond to the requested "friend or foe" signal. In this case, such glowing labels did not respond to this.
The study of the so-called "angels" showed that they are very similar to ball lightning, only of enormous size, and fly at an altitude of several kilometers.
It turns out that ball lightning can not only fly out of sockets and contact people on the surface of the Earth, but also be a serious threat to the air defense and security of an entire country.
- In the area of the city of Mukachevo in September, a training flight was performed on a MiG aircraft. At the moment of climb, a huge luminous sphere appeared in front of the pilot, as a result of which there was an explosive destruction of the aircraft nose. In this case, the plane caught fire and began to fall, the pilot ejected in time, but the plane crashed, the pilot remained alive.
According to a secret directive, information from all over the Union about unidentified luminous objects was to flow to the Center for Problems of Anomalous Aerospace Phenomena. Each private knew that in the event of his encounter with a similar phenomenon, he was obliged, if possible, to record the readings of the instruments and report this to the commander.

- We were in close contact with the effectiveness of the air defense work, and they gave us a lot of material that was useful to us - not so much descriptions, but said that there and there was a non-standard target.
For 17 years of work, Alexey Dmitriev has become a real expert in observing ball lightning. As a result of these studies, a map of the area was compiled where luminous objects most often appear.
These are Karelia, some districts of the Moscow region, the Voronezh region, Altai, the Baltic states.
But still the most interesting region, according to Siberian geologists and geophysicists, was Altai. It was here that Dmitriev had to observe the subject of his research.
One day he went to bed and suddenly heard the sound of a flying May beetle. But this insect does not live in these latitudes! Curiosity made me open my eyes.
- Suddenly I see that I have a ping-pong ball of this size at the level of my feet, in 20 centimeters. It is orange in color, has a pinkish aura of 15 cm. From time to time this aura is permeated with emerald or blue rays, in general, a very beautiful "product". And then it starts to fly. Moreover, it flies, describing the sinusoid of my body. It reaches the nasopharynx, stops at the level of the chin and in a straight line - back to the legs.
Not only individual scientists devoted themselves to the study of luminous balls, several institutes of the country worked on the order of the military. The customers themselves carried out their research using the latest military equipment. The joint work was carried out until the age of 91. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, as is known, almost all scientific work was suspended throughout the country. The same fate befell the ball lightning, which did not want to reveal its secrets even under the gun of military equipment.
But the problem of ball lightning cannot be left unresolved - it is too tempting to solve this riddle, especially in our time, when science has left almost no "blank spots". And the first names of world science were infected with ball fever.
On December 10, 1978 in Stockholm, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the Soviet scientist Pyotr Kapitsa.
The King of Sweden made a solemn speech and announced to the audience about the awarding of the laureates “For his basic inventions and discoveries in the area of low-temperature physics”.
Petr Leonidovich made this discovery in his youth, in the 30s. Now, at the end of the 70s, he was already worried about other issues. At his dacha in his home laboratory, he tried to recreate ball lightning - an amazing natural phenomenon. He believed that having solved it, he would force humanity not only to look differently at physics, but also at the whole world around. He confessed only to close people: if he were given one more life, he would devote it to the study of ball lightning. He called it "a window to another world."
But the great scientist had too little time left, and he left the opportunity to unravel this secret to his followers. And it seems that it was still managed to be discovered by modern scientists.
We met with a research team that made a sensational statement: they were the first in the world to reproduce ball lightning on a laboratory bench!

- We managed to create a setup that makes these very luminous formations or plasmoids, which we reproduce with almost 100% probability. And, therefore, this is where the fundamental difference between us and others arose: we began to be able to study them on a systematic basis.
How does ball lightning appear in natural conditions?
There is a charged thundercloud. In order for a linear lightning to form, the so-called "leader", a superconducting electric channel from the cloud to the ground, must break through its path. Having connected the thundercloud and the earth, the charge returns through the channel, and then we see a bright flash of linear lightning.
But if the “leader” for some reason did not reach the ground, then ball lightning is formed.
Roughly the same process takes place on the table in this laboratory, only instead of a cloud there is a powerful generator, and instead of a blow from the "leader" - an experienced hand of the experimenter.
A blow closes the circuit for a split second, and a powerful charge flows from the battery to a metal rod, the end of which is in the water. A burning ball rises from the surface of the water.
Here it is - a real laboratory ball lightning!
Have we finally found what we were looking for? Is it really that simple? And everyone who has been struggling with this task for hundreds of years could not think of it?
It turns out that the question of the riddle of ball lightning can be closed? Or are there other opinions of other researchers?

- Still, this effect to a large extent “falls short” in its characteristics to what, at least, eyewitnesses write in their testimonies. In particular, for the sake of this formally declared result, many very essential properties have to be discounted.
Consider eyewitness accounts that lightning can penetrate glass without breaking it; pull the human body behind you; that she is able to act selectively - to pursue her victim throughout her life; and even be like a thinking creature.
- Their ball lightning floats into the atmosphere immediately after it occurs and then collapses. Real ball lightning behaves actively in its movement relative to the air. And sometimes it moves against the wind. This one is obviously blown away by the stream. Lifetime: it is very short. What we see - those images that are shown - are just one frame.
Of course, it is possible that scientists from the Institute of Nuclear Physics are on the right track, and it is only necessary to improve the methods.
It is too early to close the question of what the mystery of ball lightning is …

Such dreams of a scientist are not fiction. About 100 years ago, another similar ball lightning hunter managed to carry out such an ambitious experiment. And it was none other than Nikola Tesla. Hoaxer or genius? In his laboratory in Colorado Springs, he constructed a giant plasma generator, during which fireballs were observed.

Perhaps there is some truth in these paradoxical words. Especially if we assume intelligence in ball lightning. It does not fall into the hands of experimenters, it is freedom-loving and does not tolerate confined spaces, test tubes and flasks.
According to local residents, real fireballs live here - on the border of the Volgograd and Saratov regions. This place is called Medveditskaya ridge, and it has been notorious for centuries. Mysterious fireballs appear here with frightening frequency. There is no better place to find the answer to ball lightning.
Medveditskaya ridge is the only reserve of ball lightning in Russia. A mobile research camp is located here almost all summer. These people - ball lightning hunters - are armed with home-made devices and many years of observation experience. They claim to have established routes for the fireballs to fly. We find confirmation of these words here - on the slope of ball lightning.
These are burns on trees, no fires were observed here, and the burns do not come from the ground. Sometimes burns begin at a height of more than one meter.

- Just imagine: this one, maybe a little bigger, ball lightning of about the same diameter (about one meter) flies here. Naturally, it may not even maneuver, it may not be trying to fly between the trees - as it flew, it flies, it flies, as they say, like a hot knife through butter. It flies past the trees, “eating” them from all sides, the trees, like apple stubs, remain standing. Ball lightning flies away somewhere in the distance on its own business, I do not understand, tens of kilometers further …
Local residents are not very happy about this neighborhood - the Medveditskaya ridge has gained notoriety.
It happened 15 years ago. On a cold and damp November day, the shepherd Bisen Mamaev, driving a flock of sheep, sat down to rest on an armful of hay.

- His partner literally went away, as he said, for a second, when he looked around, he noticed that instead of a man, as he put it, a black mannequin was sitting.
Bisen Mamaev did not manage to make a sound. In a split second, his body turned into a charred idol. An autopsy showed that the burn came from inside the body: the clothing on the victim was completely intact. What killed the shepherd was never known. But the details of this incident are strangely reminiscent of other tragic events.
In the fall of 1924, the OGPU investigated three cases of spontaneous combustion of people in Moscow, united in the "Case of self-ignited". One of them took place in the "New Proletarian Theater of the Moon": during a rehearsal, an actor caught fire and died. The "case of self-ignorant" was controlled by the head of the OGPU Special Department Gleb Bokiy himself. But neither the scientists nor the Chekists managed to reveal this secret.
Spontaneous human combustion is a phenomenon often described as a paranormal phenomenon, as a result of which a person can ignite. Over the past 100 years, several hundred people have died in such a terrible way. The flame could begin to devour its prey both in a closed house, and in the fresh air, and while driving a car, and even at the helm of a ship. And, as a rule, if the body burned, then the clothes remained intact. Mystic? Glamor? Or another ominous property of ball lightning?
Here, on the Medveditskaya ridge, there is no other explanation for the death of the shepherd Bisen Mamaev. Perhaps, on that fateful night, he decided to rest exactly at the place where for centuries the route of ball lightning had passed. Maybe that's why this place has been bearing the ominous name of the Devil's Lair since ancient times. And then there are these low hills. Local residents avoid these places as well - they are frightened by strange underground passages of unknown origin. Even experts say that they are not at all like ordinary caves. Perhaps, ball lightning can overcome an obstacle in the form of a hill under the ground, literally burning the course in the direction it needs, without deviating a centimeter from its route. This is another fantastic property of ball lightning.

- Although the material of the walls is so fragile that it seems that the cave should collapse, but there is something holding the walls of the cave apart from the material itself. According to the assumptions of geologists, the walls were pre-burnt. It would be better not to talk here, to be honest …
In order to burn the walls of this cave, the temperature is required, which is reached in blast furnaces.
Let us recall the letters of eyewitnesses, which were collected by Professor Stakhanov.
In one of them - a fragment of window glass with a round hole, which was left behind by ball lightning. The edges of the hole are melted.
And at the same time, there are cases when ball lightning penetrated into the aircraft cabin without violating the sealing.
All these incredible stories scare, alarming, surprise, but in no way give an answer to the question we need: what is ball lightning? And why are there so many of them here, on the Medveditskaya ridge? Perhaps they are born here and it is from here, like from a wasp's nest, that their sinister journey begins. Or maybe underground tunnels or overhead energy lines pass in these places, along which lightning, like trolley buses, travel around the world? There are no answers to these questions.

Vadim Chernobrov is inclined to one of the most incredible and at the same time similar to the truth hypotheses. Our planet is a living being, part of a large cosmic organism. For lightning, one of the most important roles is assigned - to perform the function of the nervous system, to be part of the neural network. These are communication channels between separate parts of a single organism. The Earth simply does not have faster and more efficient ways of transmitting information, like with the help of lightning discharges, or we do not know them. Maybe there is a clue here?
Of course, this version does not stand up to criticism from classical science. Many scientists consider such activities to be pseudoscientific. But there are many examples when it was amateurs who suggested solutions to the most difficult scientific problems: an inquisitive self-taught person saw microbes through his homemade microscope, and an ordinary clergyman discovered oxygen. There are many such examples.

They do not try, like everyone else, to unravel its nature. Right in this laboratory, the inexplicable properties of the mysterious ball are already being used for very specific applied problems.
