And according to observations of meteorologists, only in the second half of the 20th century, the average annual air temperature here increased by 2.5 degrees Celsius. And it continues to rise. As a result, global warming may lead to the fact that there will be no ice at all at the South Pole.
Scientists are seriously considering the worst-case scenarios. But it is believed that the melt water will simply drain into the ocean and fill evenly. From this, its level will rise by about 5 meters.
Jerry Mitrovica and her colleagues at the University of Toronto in Canada have a different opinion. The researcher assures that the details were not taken into account in the previous forecasts. Namely, they threaten with severe troubles. For example, a flood for America and the countries of Southeast Asia.
According to Jerry, the ice cap at the South Pole is now creating a water bubble around Antarctica by the force of its gravitational attraction. There will be no ice - the bubble will rush to the north, where the water level will rise.
Further, the continent, free of ice and its colossal pressure, will itself rise by 100 meters. Vytut, simply put. Which will create additional flows of water. On average, scientists predict a rise in sea level by about 7 meters. And they scare New York with total flooding. And on some parts of the coast with strong tides, a catastrophe similar to the one that was shown in the film "The Day After Tomorrow" can happen.
