From childhood, they put it into our heads that mercury is dangerous, it is a poison, and from school textbooks we know that mercury vapor can cause irreparable damage to health. But why is mercury so demonized, because there are even laws that prohibit its storage? Why are they doing everything today to make us afraid to come into contact with this substance?
Our ancestors were very familiar with mercury. She was sometimes credited with magical properties, and was also used in alchemy and medicine. For her sake, states were captured and cities were conquered. In the writings of the ancient Roman writer Pliny, it is indicated that in those distant times, Rome bought 4.5 tons of mercury from Spain. Throughout its centuries-old history, mercury has also been associated with the philosopher's stone.
"Give me a sea of mercury and I will turn it into gold" - these are the words not even of the alchemist, but of Isaac Newton himself. This scientist devoted 30 years of his conscious life to the study of alchemy and mercury. However, he encrypted all research in this area. These facts indicate that our ancestors greatly appreciated mercury.
In the second half of the 20th century, this substance was widely used in practice. It was used in tons in various spheres of life, but at some point everything changed and today about the horrors that will happen to a person if he inhales mercury vapors, the entire Internet screams, but how have these harmful properties not been noticed for centuries?
Today, over 20 mercury minerals are known, but the main source is cinnabar. Mercury is obtained by distillation, but there is another, cruder way. Red stones are simply heated in a furnace until the minerals begin to crack and mercury flows out of them. It seems that this method of extracting mercury was used by our ancestors.

Cinnabar is an absolutely safe mountain mineral, as well as pure mercury. Only its combination with other substances can be toxic. It is known that people who work with pure mercury do not even bother with protective clothing. But if mercury is not dangerous, why is it so scared?
