Panic gripped Africa. There are rumors of killer bananas on the continent. Locals claim that fruits that eat human flesh have appeared on sale. Bananas were allegedly brought into the country, causing necrotizing fasciitis. This disease causes destruction of the subcutaneous tissue

The Ministry of Health of Mozambique even had to intervene in the case, which assured that bananas did not pose a threat. But at the same time, advice was given that if alarming symptoms are noticed after eating this fruit, you should immediately consult a doctor.

Physiotherapist, nutritionist Marina Vaulina told Vesti FM in more detail.

Marina, tell me, can bananas really cause serious diseases? And tell us more about the disease itself?

Vaulina:Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive infection that is involved in both soft tissues and subcutaneous fat - fascia, deep, superficial, independent of localization. The causative agent, despite the fact that the term appeared in 1951, the causative agent has not been identified. Still, most studies are inclined to believe that this is a polio etiology, and as for any infection, a gateway is needed. Infected ulcers and bedsores can also be the “entrance gate”.

That is, some kind of wounds and trauma?

Vaulina: Of course. On any part of the body. And in Africa, this may be due to rather low sanitary and hygienic conditions, inappropriate, but there is nothing abnormal in the pathogens, because, basically, these are streptococcus, staphylococcus, anaerobic local-forming bacteria and a number of others. It turns out that this can be both a complication in the postoperative period, and some post-trauma - the addition of an infection. Or joining, for example, an existing oncology, some kind of colon diverticulum, there are even such studies.

In other words, if a person eats a banana, even which contains these bacteria or infection, then he cannot get sick?

Vaulina: No, it gets in another way. There was a vegetable infection in Europe in the summer. But here it is complicated by the fact that the disease itself is very difficult to diagnose. And at the beginning, while the preparatory period of 1-5 days passes, the patient may not go to the doctor in time, but here a quick diagnosis and surgical intervention influences good treatment.

What are the symptoms, tell us?

Vaulina: In the beginning there is a fever, so it can be easily confused with any other disease. And then inflammation and purulent abscess in the "entrance gate". And this can be in any area.
