THE FIRST MIRACLE
Once a priest of the Catholic Church in the Brazilian town of Congon-yas-do-Campo was urgently summoned to one of the wealthy houses to confess and confess to a dying woman. Candles were burning in the bedroom, relatives and friends gathered at her bedside. The unfortunate woman had cancer of the uterus in the last stage, and death could come at any moment.
Suddenly one of those present rushed out of the room and a minute later returned with a large kitchen knife. Ordering everyone to move away from the bed, he pushed the priest, who was about to anoint the dying woman's forehead with oil, and threw the sheet off her. In the next second, he slid the knife into the woman's vagina and made several sharp turns. Then he put his hand inside and pulled out a huge tumor the size of a grapefruit. Throwing a bloody knife into the basin by the bed, the man sank down exhaustedly into a chair and sobbed. All this happened so unexpectedly that no one had time to stop him.
Some of the relatives ran after the doctor. The others froze in silence, struck by this scene. The patient remained conscious and did not utter a single groan during the "operation". And then she said that the terrible pain that tormented her had receded. After examination, the doctor found no bleeding in the patient. And the removed formation really turned out to be a malignant tumor.
This unusual incident was a turning point in the fate of both. The woman's health soon recovered completely. And a man named Jose Arigo did not even remember that he had performed a complex operation. Rumors about this man, whom many considered a miracle worker, quickly spread throughout the district. In the Brazilian outback, where it is difficult to obtain qualified medical care, for many, he became the last hope. Patients began to come to Arigo's house, whom the doctors refused, recognizing as incurable. And the "doctor from God" helped everyone.
GIFT OF "SLEEPING SURGEON"
Soon, local doctors invited Arigo to conduct an appointment at the city hospital. He usually began to operate at seven in the morning. By this time, more than a hundred sufferers gathered at her door. Operations Jose did quickly and decisively: placing the patient against the wall, he stuck an un-sterilized knife into the body, which he then simply wiped it on his shirt. Moreover, the operated did not feel any pain or fear. Very little blood came out. Arigo instantly stitched up the wounds, and within a few days they healed. During operations, Jose always had an absent expression on his face, as if he was in a trance.

Not all patients fell under the knife of the miracle surgeon. Often, one glance at the patient was enough for him to diagnose him. The drugs he prescribed were generally well-known drugs, but in large doses and in combinations that ran counter to conventional medical practice. However, there have never been any side effects.
Over the course of five years, Jose Arigo has cured more than ten thousand people of various social conditions. He made no distinction between the rich and the poor, and in the early 1950s became Brazil's national hero.
During this time, he attracted the attention of a famous New York explorer
paranormal activities of Andriya Puha-rich. During the preliminary visit, Arigo made a huge impression on the American, who described what he saw as a “nightmare”: “One by one people come in, they are all obviously sick. One woman has a large bulging goiter. Arigo takes a knife, makes an incision, pats the goiter with his hand, pulls it out, sews up the wound with cotton thread, and the woman leaves. There is practically no blood. There are no complaints about postoperative complications either."
Soon, the scientist returned to Brazil with a team of doctors to study the amazing phenomenon and make a film about it. In addition, Puharich decided to try on himself the fantastic gift of a "sleeping surgeon". He asked Arigo to remove a small benign tumor on his arm. He did it in a matter of seconds, and the American did not feel anything. Puharich brought the removed tumor to the United States, as well as a film with a recording of operations and comments from the doctors who were present. However, the phenomenon of the Brazilian surgeon has never received a scientific explanation.
THE WONDER BEYOND THE GRILLE
For all the years during which Jose Arigo healed patients, not a single case of deterioration of the patient's condition was recorded. However, his extensive practice has displeased the authorities. He had no diploma. In addition, doctors took up arms against Arigo, who saw him as a competitor. In 1956 he was arrested on charges of illegal medical practice.
When the news about this appeared in the newspapers, letters from many people began to arrive at the courts, wishing to testify that Arigo cured them of serious illnesses. However, the court considered their testimony only to confirm the charges. The "sleeping surgeon" was sentenced to seven months in prison. Fortunately, Arigo never went to jail: President Kubitschek immediately announced the pardon of the "miracle worker Jose", known throughout Brazil.
But eight years later he was arrested again, all on the same charge. Kubitschek was no longer president, and Arigo was sentenced to sixteen months in prison, temporarily leaving at large pending his appeal. It was up to the Catholic judge Philippe Immesi, who was skeptical about what the press writes. The more he studied the Arigo case, the more difficult it was for him to make a decision without personally checking whether he really had a unique gift.
One day, with his friend, a district attorney from another province, he arrived in Congonhas do Campo without prior warning and went to the hospital where Jose was receiving patients. But he immediately recognized them as representatives of the law and offered to be present at the operations so that they would not rely on someone else's opinion. Arigo did not deny that he was breaking the law, but he was confident that the authorities would calm down, making sure that there was no fraud.
Among the first patients to be operated on that day was a woman who was nearly blinded by cataracts, that is, lens opacity. Arigo asked the judge to hold her head. He agreed. John G. Fuller, biographer of Arigo, cites an interesting testimony that Judge Immesi wrote and handed to the surgeon: “I saw Arigo pick up what looked like nail scissors. He wiped them on his T-shirt and, without disinfecting anything, poked them hard into the patient's cornea. She did not even flinch, although she was fully conscious. Removing the cataract turned out to be a matter of seconds. Shocked, the district attorney and I were speechless. Taking a cotton swab in his hands, Arigo muttered something like a prayer. We watched this from the immediate vicinity. The woman was healed."
HEALING
After a trip to Congonhas do Campo, Judge Immesi concluded that Arigo possessed an amazing gift that should be the subject of scientific research. But the law is the law, and no one is allowed to break it. Therefore, Arigo had to be punished for illegal medical practice, even if he did it to help people. However, Judge Immesi tried to find extenuating circumstances and reduced Arigo's sentence to two months. Moreover, during his stay in prison, the guards freely released Jose when one of the patients needed an urgent operation.
Shortly before the end of the term, Arigo's case was referred to the Brazilian Supreme Court, which ruled to release him from punishment for lack of corpus delicti. On November 8, 1965, he was released.
The judges who made this decision were not doctors, but they listened to the doctors' feedback. Several doctors attended Arigo's operations and agreed to testify at the hearing. One of them was the famous English surgeon Eri Leke, a specialist in gastric and digestive tract surgery. He was highly respected in the medical community in Brazil, was a consultant to the surgical clinic at the University of São Paulo and the author of a textbook for Brazilian medical students.
Dr. Leke testified that he witnessed four operations performed by Arigo in just half an hour. Moreover, like Judge Immesi, the "Rusty Knife Surgeon" - as his ill-wishers contemptuously called him - offered Lex to keep the patients' heads, and therefore he was able to monitor their reactions. As a result, the British luminary came to the conclusion that the actions of Arigo cannot be explained from a medical point of view, since they are paranormal.
True, Dr. Leke was not happy with the prescriptions that he writes out to his patients. In a private conversation, he told research psychologist Guy Playfair that "they are absolutely ridiculous: some of the drugs are already out of use, others are just dangerous in the prescribed doses." At the same time, doctors were forced to admit that Arigo's recipes, although they looked absurd, turned out to be very effective. Moreover, there have been striking cases that go against all medical canons.
THE MYSTERY OF THE MIRACLE DOCTOR
One such case involves a Polish citizen who complained of stomach pains. She and her husband were friends with Dr. de Madeiros. a specialist in X-ray therapy. He referred the patient to a clinic in São Paulo for examination, where she was diagnosed with a malignant tumor of the colon. After a while, she was admitted to the Central Oncological Hospital. It turned out there that it was too late to operate on the cancer. In this case, science is powerless, said the leading surgeon to the husband of the unfortunate woman, who, due to the difficulty of intestinal permeability, has already lost half of her weight.
Jose Arigo remained the last hope for her. Dr. Madeiros accompanied the couple on a long trip to Congonhas do Campo, where the patient was admitted to a local hospital. After completing the examination of the patient, Arigo said that she did not need an operation, that the drugs would be enough. He immediately wrote out the prescription and gave it to her husband with the words: "Here, take it and follow it exactly."
Dr. Madeiros took out an unimaginable number of pills prescribed by Arigo, and within a week the patient's condition showed signs of improvement: the pain subsided and she began to eat a little. And after six weeks, her weight returned to normal. Together with her husband and Dr. Madeiros, she again went to Arigo. After examining her, he said that the patient was out of danger, and gave two more prescriptions. And during the third visit, she heard from Jose that she had completely recovered. In addition, he advised her to undergo a previously delayed colostomy operation. The woman went to a clinic in Sao Paulo. Doctors who knew about her earlier diagnosis were amazed when they found no traces of cancer.
Jose Arigo died in a car accident in January 1971. And not long before that, he told some close people that he would soon say goodbye to them forever.
Over the years of medical practice, this Brazilian, who had no medical education, has cured more than half a million patients. However, for doctors it remained a mystery how he healed. However, Arigo himself did not know this.
