Sigiriya is the most famous attraction of the island of Sri Lanka (it was once called Ceylon). Sigiriya is a stone plateau on which and around which the city of Sigiriya (Lion Rock) was once built. It was called a lion because of the gigantic figure of the now destroyed lion, whose mouth served as the entrance to the fortress on the rock. The size of this lion can be judged by the remaining giant paws - a lion's claw is almost the size of a man.
Sigiriya was once a beautiful city with beautiful buildings, magnificent ponds, and fountains - the first in world history. Looking at some of the structures left over from the great city, you understand that it was not without high technologies of the past - the stones are too carefully processed, the water supply system is distinguished by accuracy and perfection. The very layout of the city speaks of the professional engineering skills of the unknown builders of Sigiriya.
