For the first time, strange microorganisms were found on historically significant objects in the US capital in 2006. The dome of the Jefferson Memorial is the most impressed at the moment, from the side the dome looks like it is covered with gray slime. Scientists have taken this issue seriously after it was discovered that this mucus covers many objects. This is not the first case of the appearance of strange mucus in the United States, in one of the cities a bright green slime has already been found, which appeared from sewage drains, because of which local residents were seriously concerned.
After examining the gray mucus, scientists concluded that it is a biofilm, and not ordinary street dirt. This means that mucus is a special structure of microorganisms that spreads in a flat layer over a large surface. Scientists cannot yet determine the exact species composition of microorganisms that make up the discovered biofilm. It is believed that these giant colonies feed on nutrients from numerous cracks in buildings.
