A group of researchers from Uppsala University, Sweden's oldest institution of higher education, have proposed a new model of the universe that could solve the mystery of dark matter. In their article, published in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters ("Letters on advances in physics"), they talk about a new concept of the structure of space, which has found a place for dark matter - the researchers presented the universe as an expanding bubble in an extra dimension.
New concept of the structure of the universe
Over the past 20 years, no one will be surprised by the fact that the universe has limits and is expanding at an ever increasing rate. The reason for its expansion is called "dark energy", which expands the universe from the inside. Thus, one of the fundamental tasks of astronomical physics has become the solution to the nature of dark matter and dark energy.
For a long time, scientists had hoped that string theory would answer their questions. According to her, all matter in the universe is made up of tiny vibrating elements that look like strings. Also, according to this theory, space has more than three dimensions. For 15 years, within the framework of the theory, several models of the universe were created, which were designed to explain the sources of dark energy, but now they are increasingly criticized, and some researchers even declare that the models are inconsistent.
Swedish researchers in their article propose a new model of the universe, according to which both dark energy and our universe are in an extra dimension on a huge ever expanding bubble. All matter in the universe is concentrated at the ends of strings extending into extra dimensions. The researchers also showed how bubbles can exist outside of string theory. It is likely that there is not only our bubble, but others that are carried by other universes.
