A 39-year-old man came to a German hospital with complaints of nausea, headaches and inability to concentrate on something. At the first-aid post, the patient lost consciousness, so the doctors decided to take blood for analysis. They could hardly do it - it turned out to be incredibly thick due to the high triglyceride levels.
The man was found to be suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a dangerous situation when the body begins to break down fat at a high rate. The blood triglyceride level was 14,000 mg / dl, while the normal was 150 mg / dl. As a result, a reaction arose that provoked bleaching. As noted by Philip Kehler and Mathias Kochanek from the University Hospital of Cologne, the doctors decided to do plasmapheresis, but the fat clogged the machine. As a result, the specialists decided to drain a certain amount of blood and pump in donor blood. This procedure was repeated several times, resulting in plasmapheresis at the end, which illustrates what can happen with insulin resistance, obesity, poor diet, and unwillingness to treat diabetes.
