Immediately 14 students of the 7th grade of a public high school in the suburb of Bhimtala, the Indian state of Uttarakhand, turned out to be possessed by demons.
Moreover, at first only one girl began to behave violently and uncontrollably, but every day there were more and more victims, reaching 14 people in a few days.
The school authorities could not cope with the unusual phenomenon on their own, after which, together with the elders of the local village, it was decided to hold the so-called "ancestor worship rite" on the girls in order to relieve their obsession.
One of the education officials accidentally found out about this, after which he reported to his superiors. This is how the unusual case got into local newspapers.
It all started when an unnamed 7th grade student began breaking chairs and screaming loudly during regular classes on Thursday. The other girls thought she was hysterical and began to calm her down and gave her a glass of water.
But the girl's behavior did not change, and moreover, after 3-4 days, five more girls began to behave accordingly. They shouted loudly, danced, jumped aimlessly around the class.
By Tuesday of the following week, 14 girls were already listed as "obsessed". No admonitions had any effect on them, and the behavior of the girls seemed completely uncontrollable. The victims themselves were very scared because of this and cried loudly.

Not a single boy in the class fell under the obsession and soon the village administration and the school authorities came to the conclusion that something otherworldly was involved. They decided that it was necessary to conduct a ritual of worship of the ancestors - Jagar (Jagar) and on the same Tuesday local healers arrived at the school to perform the ritual.
The head of the class says that immediately after the ritual, all the girls calmed down. She also said that during the ritual in the classroom, a painting of the goddess Saraswati was covered up in the classroom.
It was also decided to transfer the entire 7th grade out of harm's way to study in another room, and the students of the 8th grade were placed in this room.
This rural school is small and has only 187 students. It was built in 2005 and according to the headman, the local spirits were probably angry with people because of this.
When asked why the spirits had waited so many years for revenge, the headman replied that sometimes spirits begin to be harmful only after 14-20 years. Including if you build a building in a cemetery.
According to Mohan Sharma, a local rationalist and scholar in Briya, the incident was likely to have a psychological cause. He is sure that the girls just fell under the influence of some popular film or TV series and that modern people should not be so committed to superstition.
