Our ancestors have always cared about the protection of their family and home. They knew the ancient methods of attracting helper spirits to the house and driving away evil forces. The brownie was considered the most important keeper - they called him that: "The owner of the house", and if you had to move, they certainly took the brownie with them.

AGREEMENT OF FRIENDSHIP

Of course, the Boss had his own place - most often he was located in the corner by the stove. It was considered extremely important to establish friendly relations with the brownie, and for this there were special techniques that were passed down from generation to generation.

So, when addressing the owner of the house, the conversation was conditionally divided into 3 parts: gratitude, pleading and contractual (guarantee, in modern language). A saucer of milk was placed in the corner, cookies, sweets or other delicacy were placed next to it. The treat was updated from time to time (even if it remained high quality and untouched). At the same time, each time they sincerely and kindly asked the Master of the house to accept the offering and become a good friend for the household. Sometimes immediately, sometimes after a while, people noticed signs indicating that the Boss accepted their proposal and agreed to friendship. Then, during the next offering, the brownie could already ask for the protection of the family hearth from fires, destruction and thieves, for family happiness and well-being.

When a trusting relationship was established with the brownie, the eldest man in the family promised him if he moved to take him with him and never leave him. It was an ancient treaty of friendship and mutual assistance, and from that moment on, the Master of the house was perceived as a member of the family and as part of the house. And on the wall was hung a talisman in the form of a small fairy-tale figure of a brownie with a broom in his hands. However, many varieties of such an amulet are known, this is only the most common option.

DIRT FROM EXCLUSION

The brownie helped people in everything, with his help many rituals were carried out. For example, in order to drive out the forces of evil from the house, on Maundy Thursday, after the usual cleaning, they took the Master's broom and walked around each room clockwise, as if sweeping away something invisible and hostile from all corners. In his left hand, together with a scoop, they held a cross or other amulet. Then invisible rubbish was taken out of the hut. They turned right and walked for a long time, until they were in a place, there were no houses or vegetable gardens. They threw everything out there, while saying in a loud and calm voice:

Go away evil-feisty, Take all the misfortunes with you

All diseases, troubles, poverty, And along with all evil spirits

The way back to your house is closed

My word is strong, my word is castle.

Cross, tongue, castle, amen!"

And then they returned home without turning around.

Our ancestors perfectly understood that happiness and well-being in the house depends not only on external forces and magic helpers. People tried to live correctly: in peace and harmony with each other, respecting their elders, taking care of the offspring (it was believed that the more children in the house, the better). And if we followed these simple commandments, which have been observed for millennia, then no evil spirits would be able to enter our modern homes - this is what should be taken care of first of all.
