Huge shoals of sardines, anchovies and mackerels appeared near the coast on one of the beaches in the Mexican resort town on Friday March 11. The fish is “packed” so tightly that it looks like an oil slick from above near the surface
The delighted fishermen threw themselves into wooden motor boats, leaving their nets, and simply began to scoop the fish in buckets. The shoal of sardines was perceived as an ominous warning sign of a possible tsunami, since these fish rarely approach the coastline. Latin American countries have warned populations along the Pacific coast to take precautions.
Locals talk about this as a never seen before phenomenon. The fish appeared near the beach around the same time that the tsunami generated by the earthquake in Japan is expected to hit the coast of Mexico. However, it is unknown if there is a connection between the two events.
