During the announcement of the message to the Federal Assembly, Russian President Vladimir Putin showed a new powerful Sarmat missile system. It is a nuclear powered heavy ICBM with virtually unlimited range. According to the president, the latest strategic developments have no analogues in the world.

Sarmat

The new intercontinental missile will replace the Voevoda complex. Its weight is 200 tons, the flight range is almost unlimited. The Sarmat complex is equipped with a wide range of high-yield nuclear and hypersonic munitions, as well as modern missile defense penetration systems. The peculiarity of the new system is that the missile does not use a ballistic trajectory of flight, so the anti-missile defense system against it is useless. The missile will be able to attack through both the South Pole and the North Pole.

“Since the range is not limited, she can maneuver as much as she wants. No missile defense systems are a hindrance to us now,”Putin said.

The rocket uses an upgraded version of the Russian RD-264 engine, already tested in practice for the R-36M2. National Interest experts in their analytical review believe that the capabilities of the Sarmat missile system to overcome US missile defense do not play a big role, since the US has only 30 interceptor missiles at its disposal, the effectiveness of which against even old ICBMs is doubted by a significant part of American experts. Although the United States does not really have a circular coverage of its own territory with missile defense radars to attack through the South Pole, but the radars and satellites of the US nuclear attack warning system cover all flight paths for the Sarmat ICBMs, therefore, the effect of a surprise bombardment with the simultaneous destruction of the military-political leadership and more part of the US military potential will be avoided. Much of the NI review focuses on another issue, namely the danger of silo ICBMs as a weapon class for sudden nuclear escalation. A launch based on missile attack warning systems always has some probability of false triggering, which has already happened in the past. Also, the fear of the other side that its silo ICBMs may be hit by a preemptive nuclear strike leads to the fact that the parties to the conflict will launch almost all of their silo ICBMs when it starts. At the same time, given the fact that Russia’s silo ICBMs are all equipped with a large number of warheads, the scenario of a “local nuclear war” with the defeat of individual military objects is fundamentally impossible. Instead, a global nuclear strike by hundreds of warheads will be delivered across the United States. For this reason, the United States stopped using MIRVs on its silo ICBMs in order to curb the sudden nuclear escalation. National Interest experts note that perhaps it makes sense for the United States not to create its own analogue of the "Sarmat", but to abandon silo ICBMs altogether due to their escalating nature of use, and completely focus on the promising B-21 bombers program. According to NI experts, this will deprive the Russian Sarmat program of its main goal - such as US mine ICBMs and, thereby, reduce the degree of escalation of the nuclear conflict. Chu Fuhai, an expert at the Command Military Institute of the PRC's Missile Forces, also believes that "Sarmat" is primarily an offensive means of delivering preventive nuclear strikes, and not a means of retaliatory nuclear strike. Underwater drones The President also noted that the new underwater drones developed in Russia are several times faster than submarines and torpedoes.

“It's just fantastic, no one else has such a weapon yet. And when it appears, our guys will come up with something new,”the president added.

Putin said that "the results of the tests carried out gave us the opportunity to start creating a fundamentally new type of strategic weapon equipped with high-yield nuclear weapons," writes Lenta.ru. In fact, here we are talking about the submarine "Status-6" - a weapon of mass destruction, designed to destroy objects of the enemy's economy. The development of such weapons, conducted in Russia in conditions of high secrecy, first became known in November 2015. Experts suggest that in its most lethal version, "Status-6" will be a cobalt bomb with a capacity of about one hundred megatons, the detonation of which off the coast of the United States will lead to a powerful tsunami that destroys large cities (New York and Los Angeles) and the subsequent radiological defeat of the territory they occupy, making them unfit for human life.

Dagger

On December 1, 2017, the Kinzhal high-precision hypersonic air-missile system was put on experimental combat duty in the Southern Military District. This carrier aircraft is capable of delivering a missile to a target point in a matter of minutes. The speed of the rocket is ten times the sound speed. The range of operations is more than 2000 km.

Avangard

The newest complex "Avangard" with a gliding winged unit entered serial production. This system is capable of making intercontinental flights in dense layers of the atmosphere at a hypersonic speed exceeding the Mach number by more than 20 times. The unit operates "practically under plasma formation conditions" like a burning fireball.

According to Putin, "he goes to the goal like a meteorite, like a fireball, the temperature on the surface of the product is 1600-2000 degrees Celsius," and "the winged unit is reliably controlled." The head of state notes that such characteristics of the complex were ensured by the use of composite materials. Previously, such Russian developments were not officially reported.

Combat lasers

Since 2017, combat laser systems have entered service. Their characteristics have not yet been disclosed, the president only noted that in this matter Russia is one step ahead of other states. In addition, Russia's latest missile development renders US missile defense systems and NATO's eastward offensive useless.
