A British woman from Bristol, on the wave of interest in local history, was looking at her office surroundings on Google, found a shadow of a human figure on the ruins of an ancient village.
“I am very receptive about ghosts, and this may be one of them,” Fiona Powell, 38, told The Post. Fiona Powell lives in Bristol and is very interested in the history of her city. After reading a book about Charlton, a small village that existed around Bristol until 1946.
Then the inhabitants of the village were evacuated, the village was demolished, and the Bristol Filton airport appeared in its place.
“If it were anywhere in Bristol, it wouldn't be that interesting. But this is against the backdrop of an old farm in the village, which was abandoned, and I thought it was amazing, - said Powell. "The figure seems to be looking at the ruins."
The village of Charlton dates back to the 17th century, when the estate was owned by the influential Cannes family, from which two mayors of Bristol emerged. Then, besides the feudal lords' estates, the villages had two or three farms, a public pasture, houses, a church, a tavern and a post office.
After resettlement in 1946, the streets of the village were mostly underground, although the foundations of some buildings can be seen on the map. Most recently, the land was overbought, and since December the airport has been closed to aircraft. After this news, archaeologists and seekers were drawn to the abandoned airport. On the site of the former airfield, a new village with more than 2,000 houses will emerge, which will be called Charlton Hayes.
