Russian virologists have revealed the future of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes pneumonia. In their opinion, it will not be possible to completely defeat the virus, it will manifest itself seasonally, like the flu. Izvestia writes about this.
Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Doctor of Biological Sciences Sergei Netesov believes that the strain can gain a foothold among people who are sick asymptomatically and for a long time, releasing the virus into the environment. “COVID-19 will annually hit the most susceptible part of the population with epidemic waves: the elderly, the chronically ill and those with weakened immunity,” he added.
The director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Transmissible Diseases named after E. I. Martsinovsky Sechenov University Alexander Lukashev. According to him, this is how non-dangerous respiratory coronaviruses appeared, which exist under the guise of ARVI. At the same time, the specialist noted that it is difficult to predict the development of the situation, since what is happening has no precedents.
Dean of the Faculty of Biological and Medical Physics of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology Alexander Melerzanov, in turn, said that in the future, outbreaks of COVID-19 will go in waves. “As a rule, the increase in the incidence of coronaviruses occurs in the autumn-winter period. And, if we talk about this strain, then we are talking about its control by analogy with various strains of the influenza virus, and not about a complete victory over the pathogen, - said the scientist.
The day before, on February 27, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the situation with the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus could get out of control. This will happen if the countries affected by the coronavirus do not take effective measures to curb its spread, experts said.
