Every fifth out of a hundred inhabitants of the Earth from time to time hears voices of unknown origin in their heads. Writes about this online edition Newsweek, citing research by scientists.

It is noted that most of these people live normal lives and do not suffer from mental illness. Doctors reject the theory that voices in the head are a sign of mental illness.

“A person who considers these voices to be omnipotent can harm himself, because he ceases to control them. This, in turn, reduces the chances of coping with the anomaly. In the event that the “patient” has an explanation for the origin of the voices, we can talk about the first step he has taken to get used to them and live a normal life,”the scientists say.

As an example, doctors cited the story of Rachel Wadingham

I first heard three male voices when I was 19 years old. I clearly heard that some people were talking about how ugly I was and that I had better kill myself.

I went into the room in which, in my opinion, these people were. But I didn't find anyone there.

I started to hear voices in my head more and more often. I stopped communicating with friends, began to drink heavily and after three months ended up in a mental hospital. I was treated for almost a year, the voices disappeared. As soon as I was discharged and stopped taking medication, it all started all over again.

Now I hear 12 or 13 voices in my head. Among them are the voice of a cheeky toddler, an angry teenager and a crying woman. They all say nasty things in an aggressive tone.

In October 2014, scientists organized the next, already the sixth, festival for those who hear strange voices in their heads. The event was attended by several hundred people from around the world. They all talked about life with their “interlocutors”.

Now experts believe that voices in the head appear in people after severe stress or trauma. In this case, the "interlocutor" speaks in the voice of the one who is the culprit of stress or injury.
