The sacrament of death and the subsequent burial of the body in all peoples is associated with certain rituals. Some seem creepy to us, others are quite consistent with our ideas about burial. For example, it is difficult for a European to realize that in the waters of the great river Ganges the bodies of long-dead people are decomposing for years, and millions of believers bathe in this “sacred water”. The followers of this religion have little interest in what will happen to the body. After all, it is just a shell for the spirit, a step in the ladder of reincarnation.
The ancestors of the present Slavs made funeral pyres in which the bodies of the dead were burned. The smoke of the fire symbolized the soul of the deceased, leaving for another world. The bodies of the Egyptian pharaohs were embalmed and placed in tombs. The deceased pharaohs were buried surrounded by their favorite things that should have come in handy in the afterlife. Simpler people also went on a journey to another world with household utensils.
Christians do not welcome a fiery burial; it is believed that at the Last Judgment we all must appear before God in the guise in which we died. And if there is no body, then how can one be resurrected?
In Russia and in other Christian countries, there were and are many rituals associated with burial, removal of the body and other mournful procedures. In these rituals, pagan and Christian traditions are closely intertwined. Performing this or that action at a funeral, people do not think about where this or that tradition came from. For example, putting some of his favorite personal belongings in the coffin of the deceased. Ancient Egyptian motifs are clearly visible in this ritual. The custom is still practiced to put a coin in a coffin. This tradition originates in distant Ancient Greece, where a coin was put into the mouth of the deceased. It was believed that her man should pay off with Charon, the carrier across the River Styx.
Many rituals are connected directly with wires and commemoration of a deceased person. Among them can be called the traditional "funeral", at which the deceased stands out with his own piece of bread, sprinkled with salt and drink. These actions include the rule to hang mirrors in the apartment where the person died, and the tradition of carrying the dead body forward with their feet, and a path made of spruce branches, and much more. The Orthodox Church considers all these funeral rituals to be a relic of paganism. Indeed, in pre-Christian times, people believed that the spirit of the deceased could get angry and harm the living. Hence all these "precautions". Up to the point that our ancestors carefully thought out the route to the cemetery, and tried to confuse the road so that the soul of the deceased would not find its way back and bother its relatives. Christianity, as you know, does not welcome such rituals, considering thatthat the soul goes once and for all to heaven, where it will wait for the final decision about where it will be "distributed".
But in any action, and in any sacrament, no matter how strange it may seem at first glance, there is its own logic and meaning. People who work with the subtle worlds and who know how to communicate not only with living people, but also with the departed, say that Death is energy. There is living energy, and there is dead energy. When Death comes to the house, it affects everyone, without exception, living under the same roof. As if a portal invisible to the eye opens, through which vital energy and strength leaves. The soul of the one whose hour has already come rushes into it.
But this portal does not always close on time. Sometimes Death requires more and more sacrifices. The other world cannot be satisfied with just one life, it needs constant "feeding". That is why the fears of our ancestors, which they experienced on a subconscious level, are fully justified. Only it is not the deceased himself who takes someone with him, but the other world itself, wants to receive as much new energy as possible and feed on it.
It often happens that in one family, one after another, all of its members die or die tragically. This can happen if the death channel is not closed in time. Someone can leave this world as a result of old age or a serious illness, and then, for various reasons, young and absolutely healthy people leave. This can also apply to animals that die after the death of their owners. The portal is open and powerful and difficult to resist. Therefore, most often the most vulnerable go to it - children, animals, or people with weakened health. Therefore, the observance of ancient pagan rituals is fully justified: the channel of death must be closed.
