Infrastructure, and even life on Earth, will be destroyed by the solar "superflare".
Astronomers at the University of Colorado Boulder, led by Yuta Notsu, analyzed data collected by space telescopes - looking in observable space for stars similar to the Sun - about the same size and class. They were looking for it not just like that, but with the aim of seeing how they behave. And they saw: 43 "solar brothers" from among those caught in the field of vision were very restless. From time to time they blazed with so-called "superflares", which were thousands of times more powerful than "ordinary" solar ones. From which astronomers concluded: our Sun is capable of such nasty things, the reasons for which remain mysterious. And the dirty tricks themselves are unpredictable. But expected.
The frequency of "superflares", as it turned out, depends on the age of the star. Young people are relentlessly throwing energy every week. The elderly - like our Sun - once in a thousand or two years. Average.
Colorado astronomers threaten: a solar "superflare" could occur in the next 100 years. That is, they are more frightening than ever. Indeed, more recently, their equally learned colleagues - Manasvi Lingam and Avi Loeb from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics - took a little more time - 150 years. And they even offered a way of protection.
Both "prophetic groups" agree on one thing: the "superflare" will burn out all electrical networks, melt transformers, deteriorate and satellites fall. This is the minimum. The disaster will cause damage of approximately $ 20 trillion. Which is comparable to US GDP.
Life on Earth may be preserved. But human civilization is unlikely to recover from such great material losses. And degrades. Or even disappear altogether.
Alas, there are more alarming predictions that do not leave anyone a chance at all. The sun, it turns out, can literally burn our planet as in the movie "The Sign". Burn with a burst of energy, which will be incomparably more powerful than those followed by Utah Notsu and his associates.
The sun is capable of destroying life on Earth at any moment.

Large-group astrophysicists, led by Steve Mairs of the East Asian Observatory: Hilo, Hawaii, determined the power of the 2016 burst of JW 566, located in the constellation Orion, 1,500 light years from the sun. They identified and were horrified: it was 10 billion times more powerful than typical solar flares …
