On the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, archaeologists have found mysterious "web stones" dating back to the Stone Age, which may have been used in religious ceremonies.

According to scientists, the stones found with an engraved pattern resembling a cobweb are very similar to the so-called "sun stones", which were first discovered during excavations in the mid-90s of the last century in the area of the Vasagard archaeological site on Bornholm. These "solar" round stones were polished and then engraved on one of their sides - lines emanating from the center, which are believed to symbolize the sun.

Scientists have not yet revealed the purpose of such stones. However, they do not rule out that the stones were used in religious ceremonies to invoke good weather for a large harvest, writes Live Science.

Speaking of the new finds, the director of the Bornholm Museum noted that he could find only one symbolic use of the web in Europe - it was painted on the ceiling of a medieval church in France and is believed to symbolize the sky or the transition between life and death.

In addition, there were pieces of copper among the artifacts. At the same time, scientists are sure that at that time this metal could not have been made by the inhabitants of the island, who were still making tools of the Stone Age, which means that copper was brought from another place.
