It seems incredible, but as scientists at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have proved, the algorithms used by ants to overcome air obstacles and build "living bridges" are very similar to mathematical ones.
Imagine: the first ant collides with an empty space on its way, it freezes for a while, as if giving a command to build a "living bridge", and then the ants climb one another in a chain, building dynamic structures that allow the colony to move along the shortest paths saving time and effort.
At first glance it seems, but what does mathematics have to do with it? But the researchers went further, creating obstacles for ants of different complexity, for example, a V-shaped figure. And what? The insects not only easily overcame them, but also accurately calculated the optimal construction of the "bridge" and even how many "living bricks" needed to be used for this. And they did it as quickly as possible, as if using at least a high-speed computer to calculate the options. Scientists also noticed that to move through such obstacles, ants can use up to 20 percent of the builders at the same time from the total number of participants.
Of course, it seems that American researchers have not discovered anything new, since many works have been written in the scientific world about the collective intelligence of insects, say, the same bees (and not only insects). But the collective mind itself still amazes researchers, because it is not clear where it is and why it is so perfect? Just a biological computer!
