In 1983, the so-called tomb of Kitora was found near the Japanese village of Asuka in the Japanese prefecture of Nara.
Arechaeologists have long studied its structure and drawings made on the inner surface. The tomb was guarded by amazingly executed figures - a black turtle in the north of the burial hill, a red phoenix in the south, a white tiger in the west and a blue dragon in the east.
But only recently have scientists discovered that there is a real map of the starry sky on the ceiling of the tomb!

It features 68 constellations painted in gold. Three regular concentric circles show the movement of celestial objects, including the Sun. The arrangement of the stars corresponds to that of the 1st century BC.
