“Everyone knows that the Milky Way and Andromeda are approaching each other. The time will come when the galaxies will finally become one, and then we will probably live in Andromeda. True, by this time our Sun will most likely become a red giant, and the Earth, accordingly, will be a scorched desert, but there are other options,”the ToDay News Ufa information resource quotes scientists.
The collision of galaxies will happen, according to rough estimates, in five billion years. But if we take into account the effect of dark matter, then the "mixing" of the Milky Way and Andromeda may occur a little earlier. That is, during the time when the Earth will still be inhabited.
“Now it is difficult to say exactly when this will happen. Maybe in two billion years, maybe sooner, maybe later. In any case, the Earth may survive, because the density of stars in galaxies is not so great that individual stars collide with each other during the collapse of galaxies,”the scientists conclude.
