Don and Maxine Simpson from Bakersfield, California have been happily married for 62 years and died on the same day.

Engineer Don Simpson worked in Bakersfield, he met Maxine at a bowling alley. The couple loved each other so much that they tried never to part. Together they traveled a lot around the world. They got married in 1952. The couple moved to Germany the following year, where Don worked as a civil engineer for the US Army and Maxine was a nurse. There they also adopted two boys, 18-month-old twins: James and William.

“My grandparents had an amazing life,” said Melissa Sloan, the couple's granddaughter. After three years in Germany, Don and Maxine returned to the States, where they eventually settled in Bakersfield and spent the next 55 years there. According to Melissa, her grandparents are very active and there has always been a lot of love in their family. “Grandma was his diamond. I mean, he adored her and loved her, would have gone to the ends of the earth for her, and it was mutual."

With age, the couple began to develop health problems. At 90 years old, Don suffered from Alzheimer's disease, although he was still able to live independently. And Maxine (87 years old) was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at the beginning of 2014, after two unsuccessful operations, she decided to stop treatment. On June 5, she moved to her granddaughter's house as she needed special care. Don continued to live at their home in Westchester. Until he fell and broke his hip on July 14. He spent the next few days in the hospital but was unable to undergo surgery due to his deteriorating health.

That weekend, he also moved into Melissa's house with his wife. The family moved their beds and helped the couple hold hands. “I said: grandfather, look who is this? ” says Melissa. “This is my beautiful wife,” he said. A few days later, Maxine died, clutching her husband's hand. According to Sloane, it was at 7 am. The grandfather asked to leave them alone with his wife.

After 4 hours, they arrived for the body and Melissa went to warn her grandfather. But he was no longer breathing either. Don died at 11 a.m. on July 21, just four hours after the love of his life left this world.
