It turned out to be a relative of peas weighing 62 tons
In the Brazilian state of Espiritu Santo, researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London have found a new tree of the genus Dinizia (species Dinizia jueirana-facao). It belongs to the legume family and appears to have the largest mass of any tree in existence. The description of the giant is set out in a scientific article published in the journal Kew Bulletin.
The plant was found in a small area of a protected natural area on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. A co-worker found a blooming specimen of dinisia ten years ago and sent some of the flowers to British botanists in Kew. They analyzed the DNA of the plant's cells and also evaluated the shape of its seeds. Taken together, the results indicated that scientists are facing a new species of the legume family. It was named Dinizia jueirana-facao after the local name of the tree.
The British came to Brazil and conducted “field” studies of the rediscovered dinizia there. They found only 25 specimens of this species. Apparently, due to their rarity, Dinizia jueirana-facao was unknown for so long. The likelihood that the tree grows not only in Espiritu Santo is very small.
The height of dinizia of this species can reach 40 meters. Since their wood is dense, the mass of Dinizia jueirana-facao is estimated as very impressive - about 62 tons. This is more than any free-standing tree (banyan tree in this case is not taken into account, since it has many trunks). With a high degree of probability, the discovered dinisias are generally the most severe of the living organisms.
