The cemetery was discovered in the Egyptian city of Tuna el-Gebel, west of the Nile, according to LiveScience. It contains numerous burial mines, according to archaeologists, excavation will take about five years.

Egypt's Minister of Antiquities Khaled el-Enani said: "We found at least 40 sarcophagi, a huge amount of pottery, jewelry, good luck charms and over 1000 ushabti." Ushabti are figurines of people that are often found in Egyptian burials. It is believed that they will do the work for the deceased in the afterlife. So far, archaeologists have not identified all those buried in this cemetery, but they are sure that some of them were priests of the god Thoth. As the ancient Egyptians believed, they invented writing.

One of the mummies, belonging to the high priest of Thoth, was discovered with a bronze necklace in the shape of the Egyptian goddess of the sky Nat. The mummy was also adorned with countless blue and red beads, and archaeologists found four amulets inside the tomb. One of them was engraved with “Happy New Year”. In ancient Egypt, the New Year fell on different dates, but 2300 years ago it was celebrated in July.
