The city of Teotihuacan probably originated around 400 BC before it was abandoned over 1000 years later. This civilization of central Mexico has long puzzled archaeologists, as Teotihuacan seemingly left no written records.
Was everything governed by one almighty king? Or was it advice? What was their religion? What language did they speak? We just don't know all this.
But 13 years ago, as reported by Matthew Shaer in the Smithsonian, an archaeologist who had dedicated his entire career to Teotihuacan came across a secret. This is a tunnel, and, in particular, no one previously knew about its existence. It was built under a temple in the city.
Six years later, an archaeologist, Sergio Gomez, began excavations. What he discovered was a treasure trove of artifacts, from necklaces to knives and bones. And Gomez may find more: there are three more unexcavated rooms.
The tunnel was created in such a way, apparently, that it will not be found. Boulders have blocked her entrance, and Gomez says he thinks he must have been sealed forever.
Some thought that Gomez had found the grave, thus lending credence to the theory that Teotihuacan was ruled by a single bloodline. But so far, in fact, the tomb itself has not yet been found, and the archaeologist thinks of the tunnel and its chambers as a “symbolic burial,” a final resting place for the founders of the city, gods and people,”Shaer writes.
