In the notorious Massachusetts city of Salem, where the Puritans brutally executed at least two dozen people on charges of witchcraft in 1692-1693, a strange phenomenon, supposedly of a supernatural nature, was noticed.
The anomaly was photographed on Tuesday, April 25, by the mayor herself - Kim Driscoll, and the mysterious picture, of course, quickly spread among the townspeople, then among American Internet users, and then was picked up by other Internet resources.
The 50-year-old mayor captured an ordinary street lamp in a photograph, on the ceiling of which a human face suddenly appeared. The sunken eyes of a phantom, an upturned nose and an open mouth, as if pronouncing the letter "O" are clearly visible. Driscoll posted the resulting image on Twitter and wrote, “Does anyone else see the face on the lantern? An eerie sight, uh …”From these words we can conclude that the official herself is to a certain extent frightened by her find.
Residents of Salem quickly determined that a mysterious lantern was standing near the local court building, and began to go there to see the ghostly head with their own eyes. It turned out that anyone can really see it from a certain angle. Thus, at the suggestion of the mayor, a kind of "paranormal attraction" appeared in the city. Even some visitors who are now in Salem go to look at this curiosity.
Is the ghost on the lantern a warning to the living?
Skeptics, of course, argue that we are talking about a pareidolic illusion, when the human brain recognizes familiar images in random lines and shapes. In the same way, for example, one can observe in the clouds the figures of animals, birds and even divine creatures. Materialists believe that the lamp in the lantern and the dirt on the plafond create such an unusual visual illusion, although in fact nothing supernatural has happened. Kim Driscoll now jokes that she doesn't seriously believe in "lamp ghosts," and her post on the Internet was just a joke. What else can the mayor say to justify his fleeting weakness? Or insights?..
