The idea that space is inhabited by living things began to visit the bright minds of scientists at least in the fourth century. By 1750, this theory had become generally accepted in Europe. The most educated people talked about the existence of aliens, and by the end of the 19th century, 125 years ago, humanity was convinced that the Moon, Venus and Mars were inhabited. At least, this was claimed by 33-year-old Swiss resident Helen Smith.
The real name of the woman who has visited the neighboring planet for five years is Catherine-Eliza Mueller. At times she fell into a trance and communicated with the Martians in her visions.

Not everyone around her considered Helen a mentally healthy person. Doctors gave the woman the most disappointing diagnoses: multiple personality disorder, hysterical hallucinations, etc. But Mrs. Smith believed that she was the reincarnation of the Indian princess and Marie Antoinette, as well as a first-class medium. After the sessions, she painted portraits of aliens and Martian landscapes, thanks to which she became famous among the surrealists.
They called Helene “the muse of automatic writing” because during the sessions she wrote down her conversations with the Martians on paper and then translated them into French.

What does the planet Mars look like in the visions of Helen Smith? Firstly, all inhabitants move in wheelless carriages, from under which sparks fly out. Secondly, their homes are like bird houses. The sky on Mars is yellow-green. And there are many lakes on the planet itself.
Helen Smith even managed to visit the Martian orphanage. In the huge hall, all the walls were hung with cradles with children. To feed all the children with milk, the Martians milked large animals that looked like seals.
Theodore Flournoy, professor of psychology at the University of Geneva, studied his patient carefully. The result of his research was the book "From India to the Planet Mars", published in 1899. In this work, he calls the French woman's Martian travels "an infantile invention." And the language in which they were recorded, he considers a forgery fabricated by Helen in order to gain fame.
In his opinion, the "Martian" language is too similar to the converted French. The psychologist believes that this automatic writing originated from “romances of the subliminal imagination, incl. because of the memories of children's books. " At the same time, Flournoy noted the telepathic abilities of his patient.

Later psychologists Leonard Susen and Warren Jones became interested in this case. They, too, concluded that the language Helene Smith invented was a fake and resembled her native French.
A year later, a wealthy seancer, Mrs. Jackson of America, paid Ellen a lump sum to have Smith continue recording her visions.
Catherine-Elise Müller died in Geneva in 1929.
Interest in the creative legacy of Helen Smith has not faded to this day. Modern esotericists are sure: the woman actually visited Mars during astral travel.
