A 3-year-old boy from India had to undergo brain surgery to get rid of signs of premature puberty. The fact is that at the age of one and a half years, the child's genitals began to grow and his behavior changed.
According to The India Times, the parents of Rajesh (name has been changed) noticed pathological changes in their son's body when the child was one and a half years old. The boy's hair began to grow incredibly quickly, his voice became rougher, acne appeared on his face and his genitals increased in size. Rajesh's behavior also changed: he became more rude and aggressive.
The one and a half year old Indian was taken to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, located in the city of Puducherry, where doctors discovered that his body was producing excessive amounts of sex hormones.
Further research showed that a benign mass (hamartoma) developed in the hypothalamus, which is the center of regulation of endocrine functions. It was the neoplasm that caused the damage to the part of the brain and, as a result, the "launch" of premature puberty.
Over the next two years, doctors tried to block hormone production with special injections, but the child's condition did not improve. In addition, the boy's parents could no longer pay for the expensive treatment, which had to last for 10 years.
Then the doctors offered Rajesh's father and mother an alternative option - brain surgery. During a three-hour surgery, surgeons solved the problem of a three-year-old patient by removing the benign mass.
“Premature puberty can be prevented with medical treatment or surgery, but only if this pathology was diagnosed at an early age - up to eight years. The 3-year-old patient had a good surgery to remove the abnormal tissue. We managed to get rid of his tumor without damaging vital structures. Now the production of hormones in his body is normal and the boy no longer needs additional treatment,”neurosurgeon Roopesh Kumar from the Jawaharlal Institute told reporters.
