In 1961, a high-ranking Polish intelligence officer, Michal Golenevsky, fled to the West with his mistress. Having lived abroad, he suddenly began to tell such things that his new owners grabbed their heads …

Michal Golenevsky was born in Nesvizh in 1922. After the end of World War II, he entered the service in the Polish Army and made a good career in the military field - by 1955 he was already a lieutenant colonel. However, for some reason, the officer went into the reserve and entered the university at the Faculty of Law. And after receiving a master's degree in political science, he received an offer to become an employee of the 7th section (intelligence) of the Security Service, an analogue of the KGB of the USSR.

A stranger among his own

In April 1958, while on a business trip in Geneva, Golenevsky sent a letter to the US Embassy with a proposal to provide the CIA with services as a double agent. After checking, the Americans accepted the offer, and since then Agent Golenevsky, codenamed Sniper, has been actively supplying Langley's analysts with top secret information, in particular about Soviet reconnaissance satellites.

In addition, according to unconfirmed reports, Golenevsky was involved in the failure of the Soviet intelligence officer George Blake. But anyway, in Langley, the traitor was warmly received and favored by the all-powerful CIA chief Allen Dulles. And this is not surprising - the deserters from the special services of the countries of the "socialist bloc" in those days could be counted on the fingers of one hand.

As a result, Golenevsky received a prestigious position in the CIA. And then the oddities began. Firstly, the newly-minted “knight of the cloak and dagger” declared that he was Tsarevich Alexei, who miraculously escaped after the execution of the family of the last Russian emperor. And secondly, by a court decision, having turned into Alexei Nikolaevich Romanov, he began to blame, without evidence, prominent Western politicians for being "agents of the Kremlin's influence." Moreover, even the future US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and the first deputy head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, MI5 counterintelligence chief Michael Hanley were on this list. It is clear that such strange behavior did not pass by the attention of the CIA leadership, and in 1964 Golenevsky was dismissed.

Monarch in service

From that moment on, the "crown prince" switched to a campaign to assert himself in the role of heir to the throne. This is what he spoke about during numerous press conferences. It turns out that the Chekist Yakov Yurovsky did not shoot the royal family. Moreover, he obtained forged documents, according to which the Romanovs were transported to Poland, and there, in Warsaw, Nicholas II, shaving off his mustache and beard for the sake of conspiracy, for the sake of appearance worked as a tram conductor. But in fact, he led the All-Russian Imperial Anti-Bolshevik Organization created by him, the money for the functioning of which Alexey brought from the United States, having withdrawn from a secret account of one of the American banks.

The Empress allegedly died in 1925, after the family moved to Poznan, and Nicholas II, deeply conspiratorial, lived in Poland until his death, which followed in 1952. Of course, there were questions about the age of the "Tsarevich". To which he, without embarrassment, answered - he looks young because of hemophilia, from which he was cured only as an adult, and the official biographical data in the questionnaires is nothing more than a trick.

In the USA, under the name Eugenia Smith, the miraculously escaped "Princess Anastasia" has already lived. The journalists arranged a meeting for the two crowned persons, which was more like a meeting between the "sons of Lieutenant Schmidt" Ostap Bender and Shura Balaganov. Joy immediately after the "reunion" gave way to outright hostility, and the "crowned couple", calling each other swindlers, scattered in different directions.

But very soon the swindlers reconciled, and Smith even attended the wedding of Golenevsky and his common-law wife Ingrid Kampf, which was held by Protopresbyter of the Synod Abroad Gregory Grabbe. But the Russian Orthodox Church did not recognize the impostor.

What made the ex-intelligence agent become a participant in this performance? Counterintelligence chief James Angleton believed that this was a combination of the KGB, as a result of which the Chekist-"Tsarevich" was able to penetrate the highest echelons of political power in Western countries. Some experts believed that Golenevsky simply suffered from schizophrenia and, as a result, megalomania, which, until his death in 1993, forced him to consider himself the heir to the throne, which "Alexey Romanov" constantly reminded of on the pages of his monthly magazine "Two-headed eagle".
