A photograph from December 17, 2015, taken by the Curiosity rover and published on the NASA website, captures the leeward side of one of the Martian dunes, and at its foot on the right, when zoomed in, two interesting objects resembling Earth's lithops, or, as they are also called, “living stones . The objects are very close to each other and are possibly the same plant, or are connected through the root system. When you enlarge the photo you can see. that the objects consist, as it were, of two parts: one resembles a stone and merges with the landscape in color, and the second, resembling a flower in shape and location, is painted more brightly and differs in color from both the gray-blue dust of the dune and from white stone fragments. Two objects of the same type in the frame exclude the possibility of the play of shadows and bizarre coincidence of landscape details, and the presence of discernible flowers once again confirms the presence of plant life on Mars.

There are similar plants on Earth, succulents native to South Africa, living stones, so named for their appearance. The shape of these plants resembles pebbles and small pebbles, the deception is revealed only when they bloom, releasing a delicate flower on a small stalk from the middle. Living stones are unpretentious, capable of growing on sandy and stony infertile soils and are able to be content with a minimum amount of water, as well as do without it for long periods.
